Lincoln Institute for Rural and Coastal Health (LIRCH), University of Lincoln have a fully funded PhD studentship for application.
There's a pretty short time-line on this as Applications close on 3rd May 2026.
The project — Leveraging Men's Social Networks to Improve Health Engagement in Rural and Coastal Communities — addresses a significant and persistent public health challenge. Men engage less with healthcare services, experience worse health outcomes, and have lower life expectancy than women. This studentship asks whether the social networks men already trust might offer a meaningful lever for change, particularly in rural and coastal settings where health inequalities are especially pronounced.
LIRCH is the UK's first integrated, multidisciplinary research institute dedicated to rural and coastal health, and this project sits at the intersection of social network science, public health, and place-based inequality.
The studentship includes:
• Full tuition fees (home rate)
• A tax-free living stipend
• A Research Training Support Grant
• Additional funding for skills development, summer schools, and dissemination
The supervisory team brings together expertise from across the sector:
• Director of Studies: Dr Paul Mee, University of Lincoln
• Dr Sam Cooke and Dr Shanice Thomas, LIRCH, University of Lincoln
• Professor Ros Kane, College of Health and Science, University of Lincoln
• Dr Guy Harling, Institute for Global Health, University College London
The successful candidate will develop skills in quantitative social network analysis, spatial and spatiotemporal methods, mixed-methods research, and analysis of NHS and local authority datasets — a profile with strong value in both academia and policy.
They welcome applications from graduates with a relevant first or upper second-class degree, a Master's, or equivalent professional experience in public health, nursing, social sciences, social policy, or related fields. The studentship is open to Home students only.
