Did a lovely event at at this evening, organised by their brilliant student welfare officer 💛. And in true “me on social media” fashion… I took zero photos of myself while there 😂✨ But did get a photo of my IUD model!

We talked all things menstrual health — endometriosis, adenomyosis, PCOS, PMS and PMDD. It was a small group but so engaged, and the questions were excellent. Lots of curiosity about how to support yourself day-to-day, and also how to navigate all the misinformation online - I even got to bring out my trusty IUD model and bust a few contraception misconceptions!

Hopefully, the session was well received and everyone left feeling a little more confident about their bodies.

What a day! 🌟

I’ve had the pleasure of doing two menopause sessions today — starting this morning at The Hub at in Cambridge, organised by the

The room was nearly full, and there were so many brilliant questions (I was still answering while they were packing up the chairs! 😅).

This evening I’m finishing the day with an online menopause workshop for women in South Essex, organised by Mayflower Healthcare Alliance and the local ICB. Over 200 women have signed up to join — I’m really looking forward to it.

It’s always inspiring to see so much engagement and curiosity around menopause — conversations like these make such a difference. 💛

👋 Hi everyone!

I’m Dr Susanna Unsworth, a British Menopause Society–registered specialist. I run Cambridge Women's Health an online menopause clinic, and also work in the NHS menopause service and a specialist clinic supporting women managing menopause after breast cancer at Cambridge Breast Unit at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

I’m doing a Q&A day on the Perimenopause and Menopause group all about Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) — a really common but often under-discussed part of the menopause journey.

Please pop your questions in the comments below — I’ll do my best to answer as many as possible during the day. No question is too small or too personal — if you’re wondering about it, someone else probably is too 💬💗

World Menopause Day 💛

It’s been a busy few weeks, so I was actually quite looking forward to a bit of downtime today — just me and the dog 🐶. Turning 45 recently has made me think a bit more about my own health, and the fact that actual menopause is considered normal from this age onwards.

I ended up binge-watching (highly recommend!) and absolutely loved the menopause song. It captures so much of what I hear from women every day. Lines like “night sweats, too tired for sex,” and “I’m angry, I’m nice, I’m fuming, I’m fine” sum up that roller coaster of emotions so many describe, not recognising themselves, wondering what’s happening to their bodies and minds.

And that lyric saying if menopause affected men, "we’d be getting HRT from Tesco” says so much about the ongoing misogyny and inequity still baked into how women’s health is treated. Not to mention “am I invisible?” - a feeling that comes up more often than it should.

This year’s theme, Lifestyle Medicine, couldn’t be more important. Even though I talk about HRT a lot, it should never be viewed in isolation. Managing menopause is a truly holistic, whole-person approach: everything from exercise and sleep to nutrition, connection, and self-compassion matters.

I’ve also heard some fantastic speakers this month on the importance of exercise in cancer recovery and reducing recurrence. So, I decided to take my own advice today and added in a few squats and lunges (bigger muscle groups!) - I suspect I’ll regret that tomorrow 🏋️‍♀️.

Here’s to talking openly, challenging the stigma, and making sure women don’t feel invisible in this conversation. 💪

✨ A brilliant day at the inaugural Breast Reconstruction Adjuncts Conference on Friday, held at the in Cambridge.

The meeting covered such a broad and important spectrum of topics in the holistic care of breast cancer patients — from nutrition and exercise to radiotherapy and menopause management.

I was thrilled to be invited by my amazing surgical colleague Georgette Oni to speak about managing menopause after breast cancer, something I’m hugely passionate about and have developed a dedicated clinic for within the Cambridge Breast Unit.

It was inspiring to hear from so many fantastic speakers including on nutrition to aid recovery, Chris Clark on the importance of exercise medicine after cancer, and my lovely colleague Poppy Howe on supporting women through radiotherapy. 💕

Such a great day of learning, sharing, and connection — looking forward to seeing this meeting grow in the years to come!

🌸 New Publication Alert 🌸

As both a menopause specialist and breast cancer specialist, this paper is such a valuable addition to our field 👏

I have been running a menopause clinic within the Cambridge Breast Unit at for nearly 4 years, and in that time I have had many in-depth conversations with women who have had breast cancer about their options for managing menopausal symptoms — including discussions about HRT.

It is never a simple decision, and having expert consensus to support those conversations is so important. This new publication brings together colleagues working in this area to summarise what we do know, highlight the limitations of the evidence, and offer some guidance for clinicians and patients navigating these choices.

🔹 I really welcome this consensus and I align with many of the statements made.
🔹 It is helpful to have some actual numbers we can discuss with patients (though it is important to remember the limitations of the available data).
🔹 I would love to support future trials in this group — we owe it to our patients to strengthen the evidence base, and I know many of my patients would be keen to be involved.

Congratulations to the team involved in producing this important work! 🙌

✨ Women's Health Live 2025 ✨

Yesterday and I had the pleasure of attending Women’s Health Live 2025, organised and funded by Gedeon Richter, chaired by and Dr Sarah Jarvis — an incredible day surrounded by colleagues who share the same passion for advancing women’s health 💪💗

Highlights included:
💬 Hearing the wonderful speak about contraception and the powerful role of social media in shaping awareness and access.
🧠 An insightful update from on the latest menopause guidance.
🦴 A moving and important session on osteoporosis from Dr Sarah Jarvis, who bravely shared her own recent diagnosis and the long-term health implications — a powerful reminder of how overlooked this issue still is.

It was a day of inspiration, learning, and reflection — a reminder of how far we’ve come in women’s health, but also how much more there is still to do.

Feeling proud to work in this field and hopeful that, together, we’re helping to keep things moving forward 🌸✨

✨ What an inspirational evening ✨

I had the privilege of attending the very first World Menopause and Cancer Awareness Day last night, at

We heard from the incredible founder of , , alongside brilliant speakers including , and Dr Claire MacCaulay.

As one of only a few menopause specialists in the UK running an NHS menopause clinic within breast cancer services, I know first-hand how vital this support is. For the past 4 years, I’ve been working with women with a history of breast cancer — and the need for better care is undeniable.

Thanks to Dani, this important conversation is now gaining the attention it deserves. Change feels possible. 💜

What we’re calling for:
🔹 Menopause support to be included in pre-cancer discussions
🔹 Training on menopause after cancer for all professionals
🔹 Better access to specialist care everywhere

I’m proud to already be working in this space through my NHS clinic at the Cambridge Breast Unit and at Cambridge Women’s Health — and even prouder to stand alongside so many passionate voices fighting for change.
