New hope for managing menopause after breast cancer 💊✨

Incredible new data from the OASIS 4 trial just published in NEJM and presented at ASCO 2025:

🧪 The study showed that elinzanetant, a non-hormonal, once-daily oral treatment, significantly reduced hot flushes in women on endocrine therapy for HR+ breast cancer; a group with very limited treatment options.

💥 74% of patients had a ≥50% reduction in symptoms by week 12!

As a breast and menopause specialist, I’ve run a menopause clinic for over 3 years at the Cambridge Breast Unit at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This week, I had such a rewarding clinic discussing these emerging options with my patients.

🔬 There is also an ongoing trial of fezolinetant in this same patient population — watch this space for more developments.

🎥 In this reel: a little look at the Breast Unit + a shot of the OASIS 4 paper 📄

🧬 NEW STUDY: Can a Menopause Drug Help Prevent Breast Cancer?

A recent study presented at reveals exciting potential for Duavee — a medication already used for menopause symptom relief — in reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer.

💡 What’s Duavee?
It’s a combination of conjugated estrogens and bazedoxifene (a SERM), approved in the U.S. for treating hot flushes and preserving bone in postmenopausal women.
👉 Known as Duavive in the UK, although it’s not currently available.

🔬 The Study:
A team led by Dr. Swati Kulkarni at Northwestern Medicine studied women with DCIS (a non-invasive breast lesion that can lead to cancer). Over just 4 weeks of treatment before surgery:

Duavee reduced markers of cell growth in breast tissue

Showed no negative impact on quality of life

May signal slowed progression toward invasive disease

👩‍⚕️ Why This Matters:
Many of my patients with a history of breast cancer, DCIS or high-risk lesions (like ADH, ALH, or LCIS) face concerns about the risks of hormone therapy, which often limits their options for managing menopause symptoms.

This early research offers hope for a future approach that could combine symptom relief with risk reduction — but more data is needed before it changes clinical practice.

💬 If you're struggling with menopause symptoms and have a history of high-risk breast conditions, it’s still important to start the conversation with your healthcare provider. Discussing your symptoms can help identify what safe and appropriate options might already be available to you.
