Aaaaa World Breastfeeding week is upon us - that wonderful time when we are positive and celebrate breastfeeding, right?
I want to be clear - Peer Supporters are wonderful and amazing and we desperately need more. NHS staff are undervalued, over worked and stretched for time. These awesome people are out there doing the best they can with what they are given! So, this post is NOT about people, this post is a about a SYSTEM that doesn't get it, is incredibly short-sighted and often lacks the depth of understanding that is needed to understand what is TRULY needed.
The current system (generally speaking) is not working for parents AND health care professionals, and EVERYONE is getting a bum deal as a result. Yes, we need more time, money and resources but also we need more expertise! Throwing money and time into a project without actually upskilling anyone is NOT bringing anything more to the table, we aren't adding anything by just having folks provide extra support if they don't have anymore expertise to bring than the folks already working hard to support parents.
So, if we want a sustainable support system we need to 1st understand that lactation support is not something that can fully and solely be provided by people who have basic training (and I am just going to say it - Baby Friendly UNICEF training IS basic, it's good but still basic). We need to understand that lactation care is a specialism and needs to have pathways that actually reflect that, just as any other pathway in the NHS (when a GP refers you to someone else they aren't just referring you to a more experienced GP are they!)
Let's work together to make a better SYSTEM.
