Do not underestimate the power of simple habits.

We’d be here ALL day (& run out of social media space) if I tried to explain the science behind these simple habits but boy, do they work!

Find your fun, pack your plates with plants & your body will pay you back more times than you could imagine.

I've said it a million times & I'll say it again for those at the back - protecting your health, managing your weight & balancing hormones is a very simple & calm process.

We can all do it because it does NOT have to dominate your life & does not require you to spend money on pills, powders & potions.

You, YOU , can do these simple things, starting now.

See you soon 😎

If you’re lucky enough to be going on holiday, the 1st thing to commit to heart is, what you do on your holiday is your business.

The 2nd thing is, you’ll NEVER get this time again.

Everyone I’ve worked with this week is getting ready to go on holiday & as you’d expect, the subject of food, drink & photos came up a lot.

This is my 54th summer on this planet & my 22nd year as a health professional; my personal & professional advice is this:

Whilst you’re away, balanced meals might go right out of the window.

You might have an extra dessert or drinks you might not ordinarily have, but please don’t worry; just enjoy it for what it is.

I guarantee (unless you have a non-negotiable, diagnosed condition that necessitates a strict regime), you will not compromise your health.

Health is built on a lifetime of realistic & sustainable habits & can’t be undone by relaxing on your holiday.

As for striving to come home the same weight as you went, is this really something we should prioritise?

Who’ll even remember this?

♥️ Your loved ones will remember you ALL had:
⭐️ ice cream in Italy
⭐️ fish & chips in Filey
⭐️ pastries in Paris
⭐️ & sangria in Spain

✅ Your life, your body, your business, your holiday

Being able to do this is all part of having a balanced relationship with food. Food freedom & liberation from overly restrictive diets is a wonderful place to be & a huge part of what I teach.

Photos… It’s very easy to put life ‘on hold’ whilst we work on ourselves, but this can lead to experiences being missed & your place in memories being lost. Be in your photos, be part of your story & live life now.

I’ll be back in September with fully recharged batteries, a heart full of memories & something VERY special for all of us xx

An important reminder for us all.

I’m changing to a new HRT today & because I am a very sensitive hormonal peach (I only need the slightest imbalance of hormones to produce a massive symptomatic effect), I know it’s vital to do everything in my power to ensure the medication works effectively & I tolerate it well.

Luckily, I know what a body needs to support all of this.

Without getting too ‘sciency’, there is NOT a pill, powder or potion in this world that can outclass a balanced diet - FACT.

The easiest place to start improving your diet is to ensure you eat colourful fruits & vegetables EVERY day.

It’s easy & proven to protect us in so many ways.

See my earlier posts for more help on food colours.

Shout if you need anything x

Rachel, what did you buy this weekend?
Well funny you should ask… I bought some new plastic chopping boards (yeah, so rock ‘n’ roll, it’s crazy 😀).

I’m not anti-plastic but I am plastic savvy.

I know how to take simple measures to ensure me & my family don’t accidentally eat tiny bits of plastic with every meal we make.

Have a look at my photos & video, then go and check your plastic chopping boards.

If the hard topcoat has perished and you can easily scrape tiny plastic particles, it’s time to replace them.

Did I send my old boards to landfill? Nope, they have been re-purposed as Play-Doh & craft mats for my grandsons.

If you want to know more about the science & health impact of ingesting plastic, see the last post.

I’m a little bit horrified showing you these grubby plastic containers but it’s important.

I’m equally mortified to confess my long-standing obsession with plastic boxes & tubs, especially the ones with snap-on lids. But I’m changing & here’s why…

EDCs or endocrine disrupting chemicals are chemicals that mimic, block, or interfere with the body’s hormones.

EDCs are strongly associated with many illnesses, including:
ADHD
Parkinson’s
Alzheimer’s
Cardiovascular disease
Obesity
Early puberty
Reproductive disorders
Cancer

We’ll never fully avoid EDCs. They are found in plastics, solvents, pesticides & cosmetics to list just a few sources, but we can reduce our everyday exposure.

I started by stopping using plastic in the microwave.

A whole body of research exists on this subject & scientists agree that microwaving food in plastic is associated with an increase in these chemicals leaking into our food.

Blistered plastics are a definite risk, but perhaps it’s time to be mindful of microwaving all food in plastic containers, even if they say they’re microwave safe.

The decision is yours but first, do not worry & do not feel you have to ‘get rid of’ all your plastic containers; re-purpose them.
If you look at the picture of my fridge, you’ll see I’ve re-purposed the plastic (rather than send it to landfill) & I’m moving from plastic to glass & ceramic, as & when things need replacing.

My approach is based on health v. risk of my household. If I had to consider additional health issues, my approach would be different.

HOWEVER, wherever I can, I try to cook in microwave-safe glass & ceramic.

I transfer convenience foods from their packaging before cooking & if I need to cover foods during the cooking process, I choose a suitable plate, piece of biodegradable wax paper or kitchen roll.

If you’re reading this & wondering where to start, plastics in the microwave is an easy win.

As you know, I specialise in hormones & gut health for midlife men & women and the very last thing we want, is for something to disrupt our hormones and undo all our good work.

If you have any questions about this, shout.

This is a true story, written by someone who understands nutrition, lifestyle & medicine.

Anyone who says differently has misunderstood the science of food, health, wellbeing & happiness.

It’s what we do for MOST of the time that informs and influences our health and how we age.

Your Liver is a workhorse…

Its top functions include:
🔸Hormones: makes, breaks down & regulates
🔸Digestion: processes digested food
🔸Fat & glucose: controls
🔸Bile: production
🔸Iron, vitamins & other essential chemicals: stores them
🔸Energy: converts food
🔸Toxins & drugs: neutralises & destroys
🔸Enzymes & proteins: makes them

‼️ If we ask too much of it, it will struggle.

‼️ When our liver struggles, the processes (listed above) also struggle.

The knock-on effect is likely to produce symptoms none of us want such as:
🔸Hormone problems
🔸Digestive problems
🔸Cholesterol & blood sugar problems
🔸Gallbladder problems
🔸Energy problems
🔸Bowel function problems
🔸Etc, etc, etc…

❓ Would I buy specific products that promise to cleanse, boost & detox my liver? NOPE!

❓ Would I starve myself & live off smoothies & juices? NOPE

✅ I’d care for my liver by eating nutritious food. It’s the best way.

♥️ Your liver performs best when it is well fed & looked after from a lifestyle point of view.

All you need to do is:
🔸Eat nutritious meals
🔸Hydrate
🔸Keep your blood sugar stable
🔸Reduce the chemical load (sounds scary, I’ve got this covered)

Start by trying to eat some of these foods:
🔸Bitter greens
🔸Fermented food
🔸Cruciferous vegetable
🔸Healthy fats
🔸Vitamin c rich foods
🔸Protein

✅ This is all it takes to start supporting your liver!

If you need help with any of the conditions & symptoms listed above, DM me.

📌 No one other than a qualified nutritionist who understands nutrition, lifestyle & medicine can help you with this.

Take care x
