Are you getting towards, or in, your fifties or beyond, and feel like so much of what’s out there just isn’t aimed at you?

Do you sometimes feel like a bit of a write-off, surrounded by content full of younger people with smooth skin, glossy hair, washboard abs and not an ache or ailment in sight?

I totally understand. I’m 61 and refuse to be a write-off. I still love looking at photos of youthfulness – if only we’d appreciated how smooth and lovely we were back then, instead of being so critical. But I also really love seeing photos of people around my age, showing the signs of longer lives, well-lived.

I’m not giving up on staying or looking healthy. I’m not giving up on showing my arms or legs, or doing what I can to keep my hair looking strong. And I’m deffo not giving up on trying to avoid the diseases that often come with age, and increasingly affect people earlier, too. Although I have largely given up on make up and hair tongs 😂

There’s no miracle solution though. Not collagen or any wonder supplement. It’s just good food, exercise that you enjoy, time outdoors, good sleep, friendship and love.

I told my business mentor that I hide a bit cos I feel too old. She basically said “Rock it!” Thanks Ward Coaching Anyhow, I actually feel v lucky as my mum only lived until she was 57, thanks to ovarian cancer. She would have loved to have been 61 ♥️

I love a salad any old time of year but at the moment the produce is so good that salads are ESSENTIAL. I mean who would want to miss out on gorgeous ripe tomatoes for one thing?

Salad goes way way beyond lettuce, tomes and cue. You can add all manner of things - there’s a salad recipe on our website that has a list as long as your arm of potential salad ingredients. A brilliant way of getting LOADS of phytonutrients into your body.

Always dress salad with extra virgin olive oil and a nice vinegar, the oil will help your body to absorb the nutrients, as well as making it taste lovely.

I love a chopped salad too and recently bought one of those dicing gadgets from Lakeland, which perfectly ‘cubes’ up all your bits and bobs and makes it easier to eat of you are on the go.

Here’s a selection of salads. If using cottage cheese then Longley Farm is clearly the only cottage cheese to eat, ever! Most of the others are ridiculous.

That’s all the news about salads. You’ll find loads of them on our weekly plans - go to the website now and join us https://nuush.co.uk/plans/

This is really simple to make in this hot weather. Smoked salmon, lemon and crème fraiche pasta.

Just gently fry some garlic, then add full fat crème fraiche, lemon juice and a bit of sea salt. Stir into cooked pasta along with torn smoked salmon. Finish with a bit of rocket and serve with black pepper and a green salad.

Collagen supplements are all the rage at the moment. While there’s a bit of evidence to support them, I’ve always been sceptical, mainly because of how the body processes the proteins we eat – it breaks them down into amino acids, not straight into collagen.

Anyway, surprise surprise, a new meta-analysis on collagen supplements for skin ageing has just come out. At first glance, the results look promising, suggesting that collagen supplements do improve skin. But when you dig into the detail, the only studies showing a benefit were those funded by the supplement industry. Independent studies showed no clear benefit.

(A quick note: a meta-analysis is where lots of individual studies are pooled together and analysed to see if there's an overall trend.)

Ultimately, the best things you can do for your skin are simple: eat well, manage stress, don’t smoke, go easy on alcohol or don't drink it at all, and be sensible in the sun. And of course, good genes don’t hurt either but there's not much we can do about that!

Here's a summary the paper - just look at the conclusion:

There is currently no clinical evidence to support the use of collagen supplements to prevent or treat skin aging.

Cancer

There can be lot of fear and uncertainty that comes with a cancer diagnosis, and while medical treatment takes prime position, nutrition and lifestyle play a very powerful part in preparation for treatment, resilience to treatment and recovery from it.

Before treatment, the body is about to face a huge challenge. Giving it what it needs nutritionally, that's good quality, whole food, energy and nutrients can help build strength, and support immune function. It’s not about miracle foods or strict or unproven regimens, but about sensible preparation that allows the body to be as robust and resilient as possible. People often ask what they should eat, and are told 'anything', which isn't especially helpful advice.

Cancer and its treatment can leave people so depleted and the weight loss that sometimes comes with it can leave them weak, and some will give up treatment because of this. It's important to stay as strong as possible.

After treatment, nutrition and lifestyle are part of the long game. They help to rebuild what’s been depleted. A varied, colourful, anti-inflammatory diet that tastes good. Movement that feels nice, not punishing. Sleep, fresh air, connection. These are the things that help restore balance and support healing from the inside out. The Princess of Wales just talked about this – how post-treatment you can feel a bit lost. You've had all that medical attention and then suddenly you are on your own with it.

It’s not always easy to eat well or find motivation for self-care in the middle of such a physically and emotionally intense time. If you or someone you love is going through this, I’m here to help with pre and post treatment nutrition and self-care.

Watercress - highly underrated and under-utilised!

Watercress is one of those things that’s absolutely full of nutrients but which hardly anyone eats! It’s really high in vitamin K for good bone health, it has masses of vitamin C, and gives you a decent dose of vitamin A, folate, calcium and iron. It’s also full of antioxidants and things called glucosinolates, which can reduce inflammation and support heart and immune health. In fact glucosinolates deserve a post all of their own. Another time.

It has a lovely peppery taste that makes it good in salads and sandwiches. Or it makes nice pesto or a chilled soup - maybe with cucumber and avocado. It’s best to eat it as fresh as poss, because it loses nutrients quite quickly once picked.

Always try to ramp up your salads with different bits and bobs that go WAY beyond lettuce tomato and cucumber. And make sure to have an olive oil based dressing to help the nutrients to be better absorbed.

I'm almost too hot to speak, but not quite 😃

When it's this hot (if it IS hot where you are), you might find you are less hungry. That's because your body is putting so much energy into keeping you at the right temperature, and eating creates more heat.

Eating ice lollies and ice cream is not actually cooling, and might help to make you hotter, and to gain body fat which is more insulating! Iced things need to be brought up to body temp, so when they go into your digestive tract your body will have to work harder at doing that, and in doing so create more heat!

This is a lovely simple pasta dish for dinner, and if you prep the tomatoes in advance you can just marinate them instead of lightly cooking them, and serve with warm spaghetti. Not too much work for your body to break down. Whereas a big plate of meaty BBQ food causes the gut to have to put some hard graft in, creating a furnace inside you.

Happy summer's day! OMG 🌞

Pasta with fresh tomatoes. Juicy, vibrant and full of flavour.

I'm sure people must think I deliberately try to spoil their fun sometimes :-) but this episode of the Paul Sculfor podcast looks at the negative health effects of drinking alcohol, with Dr Federica Amati (it also touches on smoking).

I have a lot of time for Federica Amati, she's about as far from 'Bro-science' as it gets.

They particularly focus on alcohol's ability to encourage cancer, especially in the breast, endometrium, oesophagus and colon. Many women avoid HRT because they are afraid of its (v small) increased breast cancer risk, yet continue to drink very regularly, even though the risk of breast cancer from drinking alcohol is significant.

They also talk about its awful effects on the liver.

I really encourage you to listen. It's not judgy or anything like that; it's really interesting and persuasive.

It does seem as if the world and its uncle are saying that they have ADHD now. But I think they DO, because I don't think it's a disorder at all, it's just a natural brain version! OK it can cause some significant life hassle, but so can other brain types :-)

Anyway, if you think, or know, that you have attention deficit - with or without hyperactivity - this is such an affirming podcast. You will get 'kerrching' after 'kerrching' as you listen. Things like (in my own experience):

-Being late for everything
-Hating planning or committing to anything
-Blurting out inappropriate thoughts
-Asking too many questions
-Being unable to focus on certain things. like admin, but being able to hyper-focus on others
-Being unable to follow a plan or instructions
-Being intolerant of certain sounds (extractor fan, OMG no)
-Over-feeling clothes labels, watches, bracelets etc
-Having a head full of noisy thinking
-Having very disorganised cupboards and drawers

But there are also SO many positives! These people can do lots of things at once, and change direction on a sixpence when necessary!

See what you think:

I know. It seems kinda weird to have hot tomatoes with cool yoghurt but trust me on this one. It is divine.

Think Turkish eggs where they have poached eggs with yoghurt and it’s heavenly, well, this is even better if that’s possible. And you can add a poached egg too if you like, and a few white beans or chickpeas.

It has everything going for it – healthy fats, probiotics, protein, micronutrients, phytonutrients and gorgeous taste. A real Mediterranean diet brunch or lunch.

And don’t forget, tomatoes are so good for you. They’re rich in lycopene which is a pokey antioxidant. Antioxidants are like bouncers at a night club, they go around finding stray electrons that are busy causing trouble in your body, and find them a love partner so they can both stay in and cuddle on the sofa. The lycopene is more available when you cook tomatoes and serve them with healthy fats.

Tomatoes are also a brilliant source of vitamin C, which supports skin and connective tissue health as well as immunity and iron absorption. On top of all that, the biotin in tomatoes is good for controlling blood sugar.

Give it a go!
