Celebrating Three Years of Creativity, Collaboration, and Connection

"Kath has made connections with the most extraordinary people. She is building a rich tapestry of ways to think about suffering, and how to help others—practically, and on a more profound level."
— Mary Garner, Counsellor, Liverpool
Wintering Retreat for Health Professionals, Jan 2024

Our Founder, NHS GP Dr Kath Jones, can't remember what she expected when she registered with Companies House three years ago this week.

What she does know is that she couldn’t have imagined how this venture would carry her through one of the most transformative periods of her life—or how deeply she would be changed by the people she's met along the way. Their stories, creativity, and courage have reshaped how she sees her own life, and her role as a GP.

Over the past three years, has had the joy of collaborating with more than forty health professionals, creative artists, and people with lived experience across more than twenty events. It’s been uplifting, moving, and—more than anything—a journey of self-discovery.

Thank you to everyone who’s shared in this. If you'd like to be part of the next chapter, we’ll be launching a new programme of online events this June. Sign up for the waitlist via the link below—we’d love to have you with us.

SHOUTING FROM THE ROOFTOPS ABOUT SUSTAINABLE HEALTHCARE

"Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear a path."
Paul Coehlo

You might expect a doctor with health concerns to look to tests and treatments for solutions. However to the surprise of our founder, NHS GP Dr Katharine Jones, the answer for her symptoms were found in books.

First Katherine May's "Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times", describes how periods in life when we feel “left out in the cold”, create opportunities for "extraordinary acts of metamorphosis".

Next "The Buddha's Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Health and Wisdom" by Rick Hansen, blends modern neuroscience with ancient wisdom.

And finally, Jane Gunn's "The Mole and the Mountain", an exploration of the deep lessons hidden within conflict and ideas for mapping your journey to personal growth.

This storm in Dr Jones’s wellbeing, cleared the path for new thinking about health and her role as a GP, inspiring her to retrain in and and start integrating these approaches into her NHS consultations as a GP.

The impact on Dr Jones’s health and that of her patients, is the driving force behind Wild-Ness Health, a unique collective of health professionals, creative artists and people with lived experience. Together we have created over twenty CPD events for health professionals, attracting rave reviews, national publicity and even financial support from the NHS.

The current "storm" in our NHS, and the path to a more sustainable approach to health, are the subject of our inaugural conference, “The Sustainable Healer” on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th March at the Inverness Creative Academy.

The last remaining tickets for the conference are priced at £349, including a three-course dinner on the Thursday evening. Visit www.wild-ness.co.uk for a full programme and booking.

SHIFTING OUR FOCUS FROM PUSHING THROUGH TO CREATING A NEW LIFE

“Plants and animals don’t fight the winter; they don’t pretend it’s not happening and attempt to carry on living the same lives that they lived in the summer. They prepare. They adapt. They perform extraordinary acts of metamorphosis to get them through
Katherine May, Wintering: The Power of Rest & Retreat in Difficult Times

Three years ago, this weekend, our Founder NHS GP Dr Kath Jones packed her car to the hilt and set off on an hour-long journey into the dark, icy wilds of the Scottish Highlands, to Mullardoch House, a majestic hunting lodge on the shores of Loch Sealbhanach.

Her mission was to host the first retreat, exploring the concept of “wintering”, inspired by the Katherine May novel of the same name, with friends spanning five decades of her life, most of whom had never met before.

Reading Wintering during the pandemic had led Kath to question her beliefs about health learnt during medical school and given her the courage to reframe her own “fallow period in life” as an opportunity for personal transformation.

This new way of thinking about health set her on a quest to find tools to make sense of suffering, and to recognise the importance of us as health professionals, offering the same kindness and love to ourselves as we would to our patients.

Health suddenly seemed more about eating well, getting good sleep, going for long walks in the fresh air and exploring ways of soothing ourselves during times of change, than processing an endless battery of tests and treatments.

So, had did the weekend go? Well, strangers became friends, and I think the pictures captured by .westphotography and the feedback from Lucy Story, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner from Inverness, speak for themselves.

If you’re a health professional in need of change, then join us for a seasonal wellbeing retreat or sign up for The Sustainable Healer conference on Thurs 27th and Fri 28th March at the Inverness Creative Academy book now at www.wild-ness.co.uk.

WHY HEALTH IS MORE ABOUT SOCIAL PRESCRIBING THAN MEDICATION

Our founder took part in a panel at the UK's first "Sauna Summit" this week organised by in London, to discuss how sauna might transform our health

The four UK nations currently spend almost £300 billion per year on healthcare, over 10% of our Gross Domestic Product, and yet access to services accounts for as little of 20% of the factors that influence our health.

80% of NHS contacts now relate to , primarily caused by lifestyle, and so it comes as no great surprise that education, income and our daily habits have a much greater impact on our health than "healthcare" itself.

The integration of social prescribing into NHS care recognises the health benefits of providing personalised support to meet the financial, emotional and social needs of people with LTCs.

NHS Link workers now work across GP practices to support the patients with the most complex problems and least ability to manage their own health, to understand what matters to them and access opportunities within their local community to meet those needs.

Scientific evidence suggests that sauna therapy may have health benefits similar and additive to physical activity, and improve everything from mood and pain tolerance to blood pressure and insulin sensitivity.

Sauna also promotes social connection through a shared human experience, has few contraindications and unlike most "good habits" is considered by many to be a pleasurable activity.

It is for these reasons that our seasonal retreats for health professionals always include an outdoor sauna bathing experience amidst the mountains and glens of Loch Ness.

Our Autumn retreat from Monday 4th to Friday 8th November at Rivermill House near Inverness is no exception, and also includes workshops in , and , in addition to 15hrs of CPD in and accredited by .

With just under six months to go and only two spaces left email info@wild-ness.co.uk to find out more and secure your place.
