Karl Brennan Military Celebrant I was born and raised in a Yorkshire mining village, where a deep-rooted sense of duty and service ran through our family.

I am a qualified independent celebrant who specialises in creating bespoke semi-religious and non-religious celebrations and commemorations for serving members, veterans and the Armed Forces community across Yorkshire and the North & Central England. My great-grandfather was wounded twice in the First World War, my grandfather endured captivity in Stalag 8B during the Second World War, my father s

erved as a Sergeant in the Northumberland Fusiliers, and both of my elder brothers proudly wore the maroon beret of the British Airborne Forces. It was only natural that I, too, chose a life of service.

Sometimes I’m asked to lead a funeral or service, and sadly I have to say no. It’s never easy, and it breaks my heart every time.

This past month, I was honoured to be asked to conduct two funerals for retired SAS soldiers. One was in Swansea, South Wales, and the other in Edinburgh, both around 4.5 hours from my home. Because of the distance, I had to decline.

When a family reaches out and chooses me for such an important moment, I feel incredibly proud. So having to say no feels like I’ve let them down, and let the veteran down too.

It’s never a decision I take lightly. Thankfully, I was able to connect both families with another veteran celebrant who could be there for them.

I am happy to announce that my certificate has arrived to confirm that I am now qualified with a NOCN Level 3 Diploma in Funeral Celebrancy. This diploma qualifies me to conduct civil funeral ceremonies. These ceremonies are personalised tributes to the deceased, reflecting the wishes of the family and the individual's life and values. The diploma equips me as a celebrant with the skills to create and deliver meaningful and inclusive ceremonies.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Here’s hoping that 2022 is better for all of us.

Some interesting but sad facts about the Great War.

On the 1st of July 1916, 502 men of the Grimsby Pals regiment went over the top at the Somme and 400 of them were killed in that single day. Each poppy plotted on this map of East Marsh shows the home of a fit, healthy young man who died that day. On a single street - Castle Street - 23 men were killed. 23 telegrams delivered to 23 homes just a few days later. The wives, mothers and daughters of those 23 men were screaming, laying in the street, uncontrollable with grief, desperate for this not to be real, for it to be a nightmare they were about to wake up from. This is what the war did to many British communities.
