Yes, you are incredibly grateful, but nausea, vomiting and tiredness are rough. Yes, you love your baby, but sleep deprivation and being responsible for a small person 24/7 is not easy.

TW: discussion of pregnancy sickness

Do you recognise this character? Possibly not if you’re yet to have your baby or not quite reached the toddler age, but this is Bing - in my opinion one of the most annoying bunnies on TV.

A bunny that when I heard his theme tune being played on loop this weekend at CBeebies Land made me feel nauseous. Why such a vivid reaction? Pregnancy Sickness (and some neuroscience).

For me, for now at least, my eldest son’s viewing of Bing during the time I was ill has become associated with the sensation of nausea, the memory of struggling with incessant vomiting, nausea, tiredness & overwhelm.

3 years after the birth of my second Son; Bing, watermelon, tummy bugs and ginger biscuits are still triggers for memories of severe pregnancy sickness - incessant vomiting & nausea in a world that doesn’t still quite get how debilitating it can be.

Which is why awareness days like today are still so important.

94% of pregnant people experience some form of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, with 3% suffering with hyperemesis gravidarum.

So, today here and over on the blog I’m sharing my experience - whether you’re suffering or you’re not aware of exactly what pregnancy sickness can look like I highly recommend a read of the Pregnancy Sickness Support website or social media channels.

If you’ve struggled with pregnancy sickness how have you found your recovery? Did you have lasting impacts like this? Or do you just hate Bing as much as me? Share below 👇

Hypnobirthing, as well as gender reveals and maternity photoshoots are among the fastest rising pregnancy trends in 2024. The number of parents seeking out hypnobirthing courses has risen by 500% (since pre-2020) - but what even is it?

Well here's my quick take on it - a sh*t name, but truly powerful programme of antenatal education and support.

So, if you're in your first, second or third trimester and want to know more about how hypnobirthing and my follow-on support can help you feel informed, prepared, confident calm, powerful and supported in your pregnancy and birth. - sign up for my free, online Introduction to Hypnobirthing sessions, or better yet - grab a space on a course now. It's Maternal Mental Health Week - a week to raise awareness of the mental health needs of expectant and new mothers. I believe we all need to get a little more comfortable with these conversations so we can better support expectant and new parents. So, join the conversation in the comments below.

I've written more fully about my experience of postnatal depression on the blog today, find the link in my stories or read the TLDR version below:

- 1 in 5 will be affected by perinatal mental health problems (that’s a lot, how many parents do you know who may be affected?)
- my personal experience caught me off-guard, I just thought I was failing at being a mum, not able to cope, it was my husband and friend who pushed me to get support
- the tears, the rage, the anger, resentment and unbearable guilt and shame were kept at home, on the surface I was ‘fine’
- the phone-call for my 6 week check wasn’t enough to capture truly how I was feeling, let alone to offer support
- anti-depressants, CBT and talking therapy really did help, I got well again and there was light at the end of the tunnel
- the support system was slow moving, the waitlist felt long for talking therapy
- the truth I know now? I wasn’t failing and I wasn’t alone in how I was feeling. Help can be found, you can feel well again. Please check out or for info and support.

Societally we need to do better to support new parents, we all need more understanding of the challenges and more open conversations. In all my antenatal classes we discuss perinatal mental health, and my ears and arms are always open for a hug or a chat either online or in my pregnancy and baby classes.

Who are you now? How do you identify yourself? If you're pregnant, one thing you may have been pondering is what the 'parent' version of you might look like. The kind who has limits on TV time? Who only cooks organic veg? It's likely you've got views on things like that - I know I did.

What I didn’t consider was how differently I would feel. Beyond how I saw myself parenting, beyond a new rhythm in our life - but how I felt, who I was, how I might now identify myself.

For me motherhood felt like an unravelling. For a while the workaholic, crazy runner who loved a medal, colourful nails and travelling disappeared a bit as the 'mum' title took hold (heck, I was even called ‘mum’ by loads of people even though I only had 1 baby!). For a while, those other bits of me seemed to have gone, I wasn't working, I saw different friends, it wasn't that easy to get out for a run, or even paint my nails. And, for a while that was ok, being 'mum' was all I wanted.

But, at some point there was resentment that it felt so hard to find 'me' time. I wanted bits of the 'old' me back, time for the stuff I used to loved slipped in alongside all the 'mum' me stuff. But how?!

Slowly, I realised, slowly it comes back, you kind of just figure it out again, grabbing 30 minutes here of there, finding a new pattern of support with your partner or family/friends because, yes it really does take a village.

What helped me ahead of my second birth, and something I share with my clients, was having this conversation with my husband - figuring out a way together that we could find pockets of time for me, for him and for us.

Even now, as a Mum of 2 boys some days it feels frustrating to squeeze all those things in, that there's no room for the 'me' bits. But, most days I come to realise the 'new' me is really just the 'old' me with some pretty awesome stuff added.

Want some support to prepare for life beyond birth? My antenatal classes include a postnatal section that goes beyond the usual how to feed, bathe and dress baby - we get into the nitty-gritty emotional/relationship stuff. One of the many joys of self-employment and being a small business owner is flexibility, I have the ability to work anywhere in the world and flexibly around my family. Often though, that means I don't switch off very much - it can feel hard to take a break between the business and family life. If you're a working parent I imagine you know the juggle 🤹🏻

But, if you've met me you'll know I'm a huge advocate of self-care, of giving your mind and body some R&R as often as you can. So, I'm taking my own advice and for the first time since I established Mama's tlc I'm going to be taking a couple of weeks away from social media and emails to spend more time with my boys :)

If you have questions, please drop me a DM or email and I'll respond when I'm back on the 22nd April. In the meantime, my website has you covered - you can read more about my upcoming courses and events AND you can book in to the following:

- Teddy Bear's Picnic - Creative Baby Workshops - 23rd May
- June Group Hypnobirthing Course - 2nd June
- Pregnancy Retreat - 8th June
- Pregnancy Relaxation & Fireside Pizza - 20th June

Hello! Nice to meet you!

Hello!

I’m Tacita, I’m 34. I live in Cambourne, Cambridge with my husband Adam and our son Leo. Adam and I met at the University of Leeds in 2004, and after further study (fun) at Sheffield University and a trip around the world, we moved to Cambridge in 2013 and married in 2017.

We discovered hypnobirthing when I was pregnant with Leo. The first 6-7 months of my pregnancy were tough as I had severe sickness. I was worried, not only about how the pregnancy might progress, but also about the birth - having heard many a horror story and watched far too many dramatised TV births. This left me grappling to find ways to feel in control again. As an avid reader, I began to plough my way through pregnancy and parenting books – here I discovered hypnobirthing.

After devouring lots of books, a hypnobirthing course and lots and lots of practice with Adam, Leo’s birth was amazing – it was calm, relaxed and empowering. I felt like Superwoman. I look back on that moment in time in utter awe of my body, my mind, my husband and our baby and incredible midwife. It was after Leo’s birth that I decided I had to share hypnobirthing with others - so I trained with KG (Katherine Graves) Hypnobirthing.
