Our teams attended Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service Royston Fire Station Open Day today. We got to meet members of the community and showcase the amazing work that our Volunteers do across Beds and Herts.

It’s great to go behind the scenes and see the incredible work that our Fire Service colleagues do up close 💦🔥

🚑 Critical Care Training Day Highlights 🩺

Yesterday, our teams were joined by clinicians from East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust and colleagues from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service for a full day of focused Critical Care training.

🧠 Morning Lectures:

Dr Asher Lewinsohn - Going Beyond ALS
Dr Cosmo Scurr - Patient Assessment and Penetrating Trauma
Junaid Mughal, Critical Care Paramedic - Time Matters

🍕 Lunch generously provided by sponsors zollmedical

🔥 Afternoon Simulations:

1. Medical cardiac arrest scenario
2. Major trauma/catastrophic haemorrhage scenario

🚨 Meet the team: Ben, Emergency Responder

“Volunteering as an ER with the and BHECCS is one of the most rewarding things I have done. While my day job as Assistant Divisional Manager for Acute Medicine at Watford General keeps me focused on the operational and strategic side of patient care, responding with BHECCS allows me to be hands-on and directly involved at the point of need. There’s something incredibly humbling about being the first on scene, offering reassurance, delivering care, and making a difference in those critical early moments. It brings a different kind of perspective.

What I truly value is the balance between the two roles. My work in acute medicine is all about systems, flow, and improving the bigger picture — but volunteering puts me face-to-face with the very people those systems are designed to support. It’s a reminder of why we do what we do in the NHS. Being part of a dedicated, volunteer-led team like BHECCS, working alongside clinicians and first responders who give up their time to help strangers, is incredibly grounding and fulfilling. It challenges me, and fuels my passion for patient care.”

🚨 Meet the team: Dr Miles Gandolfi

“I get a great deal of satisfaction from volunteering as a doctor for BHECCS, where I work alongside a paramedic to provide advanced treatment for critically unwell patients before they get to hospital. The work is rewarding but my favourite part of the job is the fantastic people I get to work alongside.”

Chief Executive, Neill Moloney, joined ERs Ben and Brad for a shift out of West Herts this morning.

They attended one Category 1 call and one high priority Category 2 call in the local area, and were first on scene to both.

It was a great opportunity to introduce Neill to the BHECCS charity, and to demonstrate the impact that our pilot Emergency Responder scheme is having in the region.

🚨 Today we’re bringing you a special for

1) In Summer 2020, we identified a need for Critical Care cover in the region & began planning our very own BASICS scheme. The team worked diligently on training, governance/compliance & fundraising.

Smarter Metering generously sponsored our first vehicle,

2) In February 2022, we had our first ever trial Critical Care shift on our new vehicle.

We attended our first three patients.

3) In March 2022, we soft launched the Critical Care scheme for three weeks.

We attended 34 incidents in this time.

4) Esmai’s Story - October 2022

Esmai was enjoying a normal day at home when she suddenly had a life-threatening medical emergency. Our team responded alongside East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust

Our team Junaid & Tom had a heartwarming reunion with EEAST clinicians, Esmai and her family.

In this first year, BHECCS clinicians received 418 activations from EEAST

73% of these incidents were Major Trauma and Cardiac Arrest.

We received a generous grant from HelipadHELP which allowed us to purchase much-needed bespoke PPE.

7) March 2024 - Emergency Responder Launch

A groundbreaking new concept for EEAST - an initial cohort of 20 volunteers respond in a blue-light RRV, BHER01, generously donated by Triple9

😎 Chris’s Story - March 2024

Chris suffered a Cardiac Arrest and was treated by crews supported by BHECCS .

Chris survived to tell the tale & our team attended a fundraising event organised by Chris to raise money for BHECCS and two other charities.

9) March 2024 - Our 2nd Anniversary 🥳

We marked two years of BHECCS by passing 1000 Critical Care activations
