Are you feeling stuck, overwhelmed maybe even burnt out?

It’s something I am witnessing increasingly with clients, especially women. It’s why I decided to train as a Certified Coach with One of Many, an organisation dedicated to helping women do things differently.

Rather than continually pushing through, feeling more and more exhausted, the One of Many approach helps women access a new kind of power. One that allows you to achieve what you want in life without burning out and without sacrificing the things that are most important to you.

As a Physical and Somatic Therapist, I’m really impressed by this approach because it is embodied. I see so many people with physical symptoms in clinic that are due to stress, trauma and general overwhelm, it’s great to find a coaching approach that recognises the power and importance of the body. What is Somatic Therapy?

I'm often asked this question, so I've written a blog on it! Here are some of the key points below.

Somatic therapy is an integrated approach to healing which focuses on the connection between the mind and body.

It's grounded in neuroscience and psychophysiology

It recognises that stress, trauma and emotional pain are not only stored in the brain but also in the nervous system and body and can lead to physical symptoms like muscle tension, fatigue, and chronic pain, as well as emotional symptoms such as anxiety and depression.

Developed from approaches like Somatic Experiencing by Peter Levine, the goal isn’t just to talk about feelings but to feel and release them, improving resilience and self-regulation.

It can involved techniques such as body scanning, tracking and interpreting sensation, breathwork, movement and touch

Somatic therapy can benefit those struggling with anxiety, depression, PTSD or chronic stress

It’s also valuable for anyone seeking to deepen their self-awareness and reconnect to their intuition.

Touch is a powerful tool for reducing stress.
Why? Because touch stimulates proprioception and interoception, both of which bring greater awareness to the body and helps us feel more present.
Feeling more present is a great antidote to the feelings of stress and overwhelm. This is why massage and manual therapies are so beneficial for helping you feel better.

Most of us have experienced emotional pain like a relationship break up and it physically hurts
⬇️
Trying to avoid feeling emotions requires suppression and muscle tension which takes a lot of energy to maintain
⬇️
And at some point the body will start complaining
⬇️
Pain that does not respond to standard treatments often has a suppressed emotion as it's root cause
⬇️
Dealing with the root cause means acknowledging and dealing with the emotion
⬇️

How do you react to stress?

The list of physical symptoms associated with stress is HUGE!
The stress response in the short term is really useful
But when it continues and the system doesn't come back to rest mode, that's when issues occur
If you're finding that your symptoms are not going away or you only get short-term relief with treatment, maybe it's time to consider the bigger picture
Working directly to influence the nervous system is the key to creating lasting change ✨

Recovery is more than just getting better physically
There are many elements to it
Because illnesses and injuries can leave a legacy ⬇️

🔸Lost trust in your body after an illness
🔹Lacking confidence in doing certain activities
🔸Anxiety about getting back to sport/hobbies
🔹Feeling like part of your body doesn't 'belong' to you anymore
🔸Hypersensitivity around a body area as if on high alert ‘just in case’ something happens

For older people, being able to have physio in their own home makes a massive difference.

🔸Maybe they're struggling after a fall
🔸Maybe they've lost mobility after a stay in hospital
🔸Or maybe they've lost confidence with every day tasks
Seeing older people in their own environment means you see exactly what they are having difficulty with.
Any input that they need can then be tailored specifically for them.
Being able to support people to get back on their feet and retrieve a sense of independence really is such privileged work.
