⚠️ Why are all of these foods potential choking hazards for babies and small children?
Size, shape and consistency!
Hard, round foods that do not dissolve in the mouth and cannot be chewed properly by babies or toddlers without molars are a risk for choking.
Foods like grapes and sausages that are round are the perfect shape for getting stuck in your baby's or child’s airway.
Food like sticky marshmallows, particularly when wet with saliva, can stick to your child’s throat and be very difficult to dislodge.
Lollipops on sticks might be fine to suck, but we know the lollipop itself can easily come off its stick and sucked into your toddlers throat.
Please take care to cut foods properly to make sure that even if they get stuck, they won’t completely block the airway. Cut grapes, tomatoes and hot dogs lengthways into long strips rather than round or in halves.
And why not come and learn how to deal with a choking incident at a Mini First Aid class so that if the worst does happen, you are fully prepared and ready to jump in and help your child.
