What does health & fitness look like to you?

Do you always equate them to a certain body ideal or number on the scales?

If anything stood out for me last weekend, it was just how much more all of us are than our physical bodies!

And true health looks different for each one of us

Heavily shaped by what matters most to you

Not by what the fitness industry tells you it should be

So take a moment to ask yourself…what does health mean to me?

I bet you a drunken piggy back that the answer has nothing do with having abs or being shredded

And I am so grateful to call them friends 🙋‍♀️

This blonde beauty is one of the kindest, selfless, genuinely good-hearted, most wonderful human beings I’ve ever met

If I can be half the person she is when I grow up I’ll be proud af 🙌

Some so-called fitness professionals will have you believe that your body is the most important & interesting thing about you

But is that really what you want to believe?

I’d respectfully disagree

I’ve unfortunately been to more funerals than I can count on both hands, and not once did anyone say…

“They’ll be so missed because of that physique”

Or

“What a wonderful person their abs made them”

Come on guys, you deserve better

We are so much more than our bodies

And you can have physique goals WITHOUT it becoming your identity

One of my clients just achieved hers AND improved her relationship with food🙌

She’d spent years trying but getting nowhere, other than deeper into a negative cycle of on/off dieting & hating her body more!

But more importantly, she achieved her goals while continuing to be the most amazing mother, friend, sister, Nurse, & maintaining a social life that requires a PA 🤣

We don’t live our lives to maintain our body

Our body’s are supposed to support up to live our lives 💛

Why are some habits around food so easy to form?

Then the habits we really want to focus on can be an absolute ball ache?

A lot of our eating behaviours are habits that we may or may not be wanting to rely on

But notice I said “rely on”?

All of our habits are serving us in some way, shape or form

Just think about it

Nailing a multipack of chocolate bars stops you thinking about that stress at work, right?

But for how long?

So many people come to me with habits they don’t want, yet they don’t know how to break them

Most of my habits with food are helpful (yes I said most, because shock…I’m not perfect)

But even then, sometimes I change helpful habits because I no longer need them

Or because my goals have changed

But the thing with food is, we can never f^*k up!

And until we change that mindset, it’s hard to break the habit!

Bit of a different recommendation from me

But hopefully still helpful

I was recommended all 3 of these books & I’m so grateful for that

There’s more books that I could add to this list

But in the last few years, these are the key ones that had a significant impact on which direction I took

I’ve never really been a glass half empty kinda person

But if you are

These books have a good chance of changing that

It’s hard to ignore what’s more important in life after reading these

There’s lots which helped me when I was working on my own food relationship & body image too

So I’ll share them with you soon 🙋‍♀️

But this post highlights companies using the research we have to push their own narrative for financial gain!

Because yes, the gut health research we have is super helpful & interesting

But can it actually be applied on an individual level?

And surprise, surprise…ZOE offers you the answer to all your gut health problems, in the form of their own expensive supplement 🤦‍♀️

We’re learning more & more about gut health & what helps or hinders it

But it’s not at the point to for us to give personalised nutritional recommendations based on individual gut microbiome analysis

Now get your head out of the gutter

Chewing?

The start of you digestion

Most of us aren’t doing enough of it (again head out of gutter please)

And you wanna know why it matters?

You know that bloating & sudden fullness you feel after eating?

Shortly followed by hunger pangs?

But you can’t possibly be hungry because you ate enough, right?

Did you eat it though? Or did you inhale it?

I’m guilty of it as a Nurse

You can’t eat, drink, p**s & catch up on life in 20 minutes

So you learn to scran your food like someone’s coming to take it off you

Except there’s a reason digestion starts in the mouth

We need to break down that food

Not just mechanically

But chewing supports our digestive enzymes to do their job

It can even increase how many nutrients we absorb from the food

And it has a huge link to how full or hungry we feel, so may impact overall weight

And if anything is worth trying to get rid of that bloat, surely it’s this free & easy thing we are already doing? Just maybe not enough

See the importance in it now?

And just how much you may be able to address by simply chewing your food a bit more?

At least don’t inhale it like I did for years

Savour it 🤤

It’s there to be enjoyed after all 🙋‍♀️

You’re gonna wanna scroll to the end…🥹

Reading client check ins is one of my favourite things 🥰

Because it’s not just about celebrating the numbers, the habits, or the things going well

It’s about recognising the challenges being overcome!

Of course we celebrate fat loss - when it’s healthy to do so

We celebrate weight gain - when it’s healthy to do so

We celebrate exercise consistency or knowing when to pull back & rest - yes, when it’s healthy to do so

Because the same habits & behaviours can be supportive or unsupportive depending on the person

And this is exactly why our coaching works, because you don’t have to fit into our plan or system

We fit it all around you 🫶

And these clients are reaping the rewards of that & all the efforts their putting in 👏
