When Sam first came to see me in January, he felt overwhelmed. He desperately wanted to lose weight in order to improve his health, but felt that it was impossible with his busy life.

He does not have a 'regular' job and ate as and when he could.

He also felt that he did not have any time to exercise.

During the consultation we agreed on some small changes:
1. Ensuring a regular lunch and evening meal
2. Walking for 10 minutes each day

Sam took on these challenges with much determination as he felt they were small enough to manage.

The best thing was that they were also big enough to make a difference!

8 weeks on, he is 4kg down and still going. AND he feels the changes are sustainable despite his busy lifestyle.

Have you ever eaten a chocolate bar or missed a session at the gym and felt that it was a really bad day?

That is not a bad day!

A bad day is losing your job or having a terrible accident.

Eating more than we should or missing a workout is not ideal, but all part of real life. It should not be a reason to feel guilty or disregard all the good habits you are already implementing.

The best (and healthiest) thing to do is draw a line under it and start afresh.

Every day is a new opportunity to make positive changes.

Let me know if you agree!

Insulin's main purpose is to transport glucose from the bloodstream in to the body cells for use as energy.

Any excess glucose can be stored as glycogen in the liver or muscle cells.

If we eat more calories than we need and do not burn them off through physical activity, these glycogen stores may become full and the body stores the extra glucose as fat.

A certain amount of fat can be stored under the skin. Depending on our genetic make-up, when these stores become full too, excess fat may be stored around our organs.

This becomes particularly problematic when fat is stored around our liver and pancreas, disturbing the delicate balance between the production of glucose and insulin and leading to increased blood glucose levels.

If you have any of the symptoms of insulin and would like to find out how to reduce it in order to reduce your risk of Type 2 Diabetes, CONTACT ME NOW.

Do you love the idea of a meal plan telling you exactly what to eat each day?

So often in clinic, I am asked to write meal plans for excited clients. They want to know what and when to eat to lose weight or control their blood glucose levels/Diabetes.

Unfortunately, experience has shown me that these meal plans rarely work long-term. In the short-term they can work, but many people get bored of the meals or the rigidity of it after several weeks or months.

So, what happens then?

The most common response to deciding not to continue with a meal plan is to go back to exactly what we were doing before. And if that caused our blood glucose or weight to increase before, it will do so again.

I believe passionately in educating my clients in food choices and portion sizes to allow them to live a 'normal' life without needing to stick to a rigid meal plan. I teach you HOW to eat, rather than WHAT to eat.

Having said that, meal planning can be very helpful in allowing you to shop for the foods you need and not get left reaching for snacks when you dont have a meal planned for the evening.

I, therefore, do offer meal suggestions (with portion sizes), which are interchangeable, thereby giving my clients the structure they want, along with the flexibility they need.

Celebrating Halloween does not have to be as scary as you think!

I truly believe that we should all be able to celebrate and enjoy the fun moments in life.

Having said that, if you are trying to lose weight or manage your diabetes, you may wish to be a bit more careful.

Many restaurants and coffee shops now provide details nutritional information, so you can check the menu ahead of time and make more calorie-savvy choices.

Choosing a smaller drink and a slightly different dessert can save you a lot of calories.

Selecting a tall pumpkin spice latte rather than a venti and a Pumpkin Spice cookie rather than a slice of Pumpkin Marble Loaf cake would save more than 200 calories!!

This is a big difference and allows you to be a bit more careful while still enjoying Halloween!

When Linda first came to see me in July, she was not confident that she would be able to lose any weight. This was partly due to being told that it was not possible following her hysterectomy in 2011 but also due to a long history of yo yo dieting.

She was due to retire imminently and felt this was a good time to take on her own health.

During the consultation we agreed on some small changes:
1. Changing the proportions on her plate
2. Increasing water intake
3. Incorporating more walking

Linda felt so inspired by the small changes that she could make that she did all of the above plus more!

Two months later, she has lost 3.8kg and 2.5cm from her waist.

Not bad for a lady who "couldn't lose weight"!
