The temperature has dropped again, and cold weather can be especially risky for older people at home. Here are some simple ways to stay safe and warm during this cold snap:
Keep your home warm
🔥Aim for at least 18°C in the rooms you use most
🔥Close curtains at dusk and keep doors closed to stop draughts
🔥Use blankets and layers rather than one thin layer
Dress for warmth, even indoors
🧤Wear several thin layers, including a cardigan or jumper
🧤Warm socks and slippers with good grip to prevent falls
🧤A hat and scarf if you feel the cold, even inside
Stay safe when going outside
🥶Avoid going out in icy conditions if you can
🥶Wear sturdy shoes with good grip
🥶Take your time, use handrails, and keep paths clear where possible
Eat, drink and move regularly
☕️Have regular hot drinks and at least one hot meal a day
☕️Try to move around every hour to keep your circulation going
☕️Keep a small stock of easy meals in case you cannot get to the shops
Look out for signs of the cold affecting health
❗️Shivering, confusion, slurred speech or extreme tiredness can be warning signs
❗️If you are worried about someone, seek medical advice promptly
❗️In an emergency, call 999
➡️Check in on neighbours and loved ones
➡️A quick phone call or visit can make a big difference
➡️Make sure they have heating, food, and their medication
