Adjusting : Embrace Friday

‘You can’t control the wind but you can adjust your sails.’ Unknown

I love this reminder that life can be stormy; but whilst the ‘storms’ are beyond our control, we can adjust/shift/change/adapt the way that we respond to and navigate our way through them. When we move away from the mindset of trying to control the uncontrollable, and instead continue to learn and grow by modifying our approach and looking for solutions, we boost our tenacity, creativity, adaptability and sense of empowerment.

Some Ways To Rest…..

Resting (ceasing work or movement in order to relax, sleep or recover strength) is essential for maintaining overall health and well-being.

• Physical – sleep/napping, stretching/gently moving.
• Mental – short breaks/time away, mindfulness/meditation.
• Sensory – quiet environments/nature, digital detox, reduced sensory stimulation.
• Emotional – alone/reflection/recharge time.

Taking rest promotes physical health, mental clarity, emotional stability, a balanced lifestyle and contributes to long term health and holistic wellness.

Coming Up This Week
Spacious Shoulders

Feeling congested and tense in and around the shoulders is certainly not unusual!! Many of us experience stiffness and discomfort or pain here, possibly due to poor posture, sedentary lifestyle, stress, anxiety, or even the weight of life’s responsibilities and expectations.
So, in this week’s Slow Flow Hatha Yoga sessions we will be focusing on the shoulder area.

Expect moves and shapes to free-up, mobilise and help create more space and ease around the whole shoulder area – shoulders, upper back, upper chest and neck - and some shoulder-releasing restorative shapes at the end of the session, to leave your shoulders feeling more supple, stable and spacious, and maybe you’ll feel a little less weighed-down too!!! 😊

See you in class!!

Setting The Tone For The Weekend
Presence & Acceptance : Embrace Friday

‘99% of the harm is caused by your head, by you and your thoughts. 1% of the harm is caused by reality, what actually happens and the outcome…..’ Steven Bartlett, Entrepreneur

This quote is a reminder that, most of the time, the way we think about a problem, our interpretation of events, is the issue, rather than to the actuality of the problem itself. Our mindset and internal dialogue have a profound impact on how we perceive ‘reality’ and very often outcomes are not actually as devastating as we feared. Reshaping negative thinking tendencies and mindfully reframing perceived problems can cultivate a more peaceful, resilient mindset, and increase our sense of well-being.

Feeling Overwhelmed?

Try this simple qigong practice, to reduce and shift the sensations of overwhelm.

1. Stand tall with the feet slightly wider than hips, soft knees.
2. Inhale - Reach the arms out to the sides and up; imagining you’re gathering energy up from the ground.
3. Once the elbows reach ear height, begin to turn the palms face down, bring fingertips closer, and start to move the hands down through the front of the body; imagining you’re inviting that energy into the body, clearing and cleansing any feelings of overwhelm.
4. Repeat X3.
5. Pause in stillness for a few seconds before moving on with your day……

Mini Home Practice

Even though there’s no classes this week, why not indulge your ‘self’ and introduce a mini home yoga practice into your day instead? A mini yoga practice doesn’t need to take that long – and can be surprisingly beneficial. And you can practice at a pace and in a style that suits your particular needs and how you’re feeling on any given day.

Perhaps choose one, two, three, or all four from:
• Gentle joint oilings and limberings
• Sun salutations and warrior poses
• Breath focused meditation
• Complete relaxation

Enjoy 😉

Wandering & Wondering : Embrace Friday

Wandering can be travelling aimlessly from place to place. Wondering can be having a sense of curiosity and an opportunity to muse. Both combined can help us to feel, appreciate and connect with the world around us.

Take some time to wander – see where life takes you – and wonder at the amazing-ness of it all.

Land, Arrive, Relax On Purpose

It only takes 3 breaths – to pause on the spot, to feel more spacious and able to respond rather than react.

1. Land – 1st inhale feel breath expand within, then exhale feel body weight drain down and yourself land on the earth.
2. Arrive –2nd inhale feel breath fill within, then exhale into the present moment.
3. Relax On Purpose – 3rd inhale feel breath fill within, then release, let go, relax on purpose – jaw unclenches, shoulders release, fists unfurl, joints loosen.

Try it for yourself……

Coming Up This Week
Happy Glutes

In this week’s Slow Flow Hatha Yoga classes we will be focusing on our body’s largest and most powerful muscles – the glutes!

Well-functioning glutes help us to move well and efficiently, as well as staying upright and stable, but due to our chair-laden lifestyles, they can become slack and weak, which can in turn have an impact on low back, pelvis, hips, hamstrings, knees, calves, ankles, shoulders and elbows…..

We will be practising familiar moves and shapes to awaken, strengthen, stretch/elongate and release the glutes, before finishing with a well-deserved relaxation at the end of the session.

See you in class!!!!!

Presence & Acceptance : Embrace Friday

‘Be where you are, not where you think you should be.’ Steven Pressfield, Novelist & Author

This quote encourages us to be mindful and engaged in what is happening right now, embracing our current situation with it’s pitfalls and challenges as well as the good fortune and advantages. Ceasing fixating on what’s missing, cultivating presence and welcoming what is reduces anxiety, stress and negative emotions, and increases our sense of satisfaction, fulfilment and contentment.

Gentle Reminder

Physical flexibility is NOT required to practice yoga. Whilst practising yoga postures may bring greater physical flexibility, it is an ancient and practical way of developing physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance and wellbeing.

It is holistic practice that allows you to meet and greet yourself where you actually are, regardless of body ‘type’, with an open mind and heart, and to nurture and enrich your mind, body and spirit.

Setting The Tone For The Weekend

Today Matters Most : Embrace Friday

‘Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.’ Bhudda

This quote invites us to seize the day, each day, and make the most of it, one day at a time. Yesterday is behind us, tomorrow in front, today holds all that is real and what matters most.
Every morning presents us with a clean slate and is an opportunity to leave the mistakes and challenges of yesterday behind and begin again with a sense of possibility and optimism.

Flux & Flow

Everything around us, our lives and we are constantly changing, shifting, moving.

And so is our yoga practice – how we move, breathe, focus and meditate. Noticing, observing, listening to and managing well the shifts and changes in our yoga practice, equips us with tools to understand, adapt and accept the flux and flow of life off the mat.

14/05/2024

Coming Up this week:

Breath Centred Flow

In this week’s Slow Flow Hatha Yoga sessions we will be encouraging a deep and focused awareness of breath as we practice.
With this deeper awareness we are able to better sense and really feeeeeeel what’s going on – be it in movement/flow or stillness/holds – and our practice becomes more aligned, holistic and meditative. We are better able to sense the interplay between and amalgamation of body, breath and mind, and cultivate a greater state of balance, relaxation and awareness.

Expect familiar moves and shapes and a luxurious relaxation at the end of the session 😉
See you in class!!!

Stop And Smell The Roses : Embrace Friday

It’s good to remind ourselves of this saying, which gives us a gentle nudge to pause and appreciate the present; the beauty, wonder and simple pleasures that are part of all our lives. It encourages us to take a pause from hectic schedules, technology, responsibilities, life expectations and to find joy in the little things. It reminds us to not let life pass by without taking a little time to truly experience and appreciate it 🌹 🌹 🌹
