🦠 What is Shingles? 🦠
BMG patients, Shingles is a painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. It only affects one side of your body and starts with a tingly blistered rash. It can affect anyone ,who’s had chickenpox before! 😣

👵👴 Who can get it?
Mostly older adults and those with a weakened immune system are at higher risk. But.... it can happen to anyone!

⚠️ What to do if you get shingles:
Put a request in to see one of our clinicians — early intervention can help reduce pain and associated symptoms.
If we catch within 72 hours of the rash starting, we can prescribe antiviral tablets . Normally its the pain, that is the worst symptom, so we often recommend over the counter medications for this.
Top tips: Avoid scratching or touching the rash to prevent spreading.
Rest and take care of yourself.
Its contagious, so don't share towels
So if you get the "tingle" gives us a "ti**le" (or submit an online request )

To help you be seen quicker ⏱️ or by the most suitable clinician for your needs 🩺, you may be offered an appointment at a site that is not nearest your home or with your registered GP.

🗓️ If we call you, which is usually for an on the day urgent appointment, we'll always tell you where your appointment is, who with and what time.
📲 If it's booked electronically, you’ll get a text confirming the time and location.

❗ Just yesterday morning, 2 patients arrived at the wrong surgery — which sadly meant their appointments were missed 😢 and couldn’t be used to help someone else.

🚫🍷 ALCOHOL-FREE DAYS – YOUR BODY WILL THANK YOU! 🍹💪
BMG patients, thinking of cutting down on alcohol?
Swapping some of your usual drinks for low or zero percent alternatives is a great way to reduce both alcohol AND calorie intake! 🙌✨
🧠 There's no completely risk-free level of drinking, but here are the UK’s low-risk guidelines:
✅ No more than 14 units per week (men & women)
📆 Spread them over at least 3 days
🚫 Include alcohol-free days every week!
Why it matters? Regular heavy drinking can increase the risk of:
⚠️ Cancers (mouth, throat, liver, bowel, breast + more)
⚠️ Stroke & heart problems 💓
⚠️ Liver disease & nerve damage
⚠️ Mental health issues 🧠
⚠️ Weight gain ⚖️
⚠️ Vascular dementia
📏 Know your units!
🥃 1 shot of spirit (25ml, 40%) = 1 unit
🍷 Small glass of wine (125ml, 12%) = 1.5 units
🍺 Pint of beer (3.6%) = 2 units
🍾 1 bottle of wine (750ml, 13.5%) = 10 units!
💡 Top tip: Look for 0% or low-alcohol drinks – they taste great and help you stay on track!

BMG patients, on Sunday the 20th, a group of our staff joined Stanleys Community Centre Morecambe , Lancs Youth and Active Lives Lancashire (in all that rain) to cycle from 8am until 8pm at the Heysham Viking Festival to help raise funds to support ten young people from the area take part in an epic eight day Caledonian Triathlon across the Scottish Highlands.
The 12-hour cycle event is complete but here is still time to donate - you can donate on-line via just giving👉 https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/caledoniantriathlon?utm_medium=CA&utm_source=CL and every donation will help.
