Today is an opportunity to shine a light on Dad's and the importance of including them on baby's health records.
Over the past three years our Health Visiting team have been inviting Dads to have health records linked to their baby's formally recognising that 'dad's health' is deeply connected to their babies' wellbeing.
Find out more about the national picture and how NHS England are planning to increase this across the country next month

A big step forward for father-inclusive care.

NHS England has announced that from December, it will begin adding fathers and second parents to babies' health records using data from birth registrations.

It might sound like a small change, but it’s a hugely significant one. For the first time, the NHS will formally recognise that dads’ health, just like mums', is deeply connected to their babies' wellbeing.

Until now, a baby’s health record has been automatically linked to their mum’s records but not their dad’s. This new move marks an important first step towards a more complete picture of family health.

"We know that outcomes for babies are best when they are supported by a network of loving adults. Dads are an important part of that picture, but until now they haven’t been formally recognised on their baby’s health record. This announcement might sound technical, but for babies and their families it marks a vital step forward."
-Dr Matt Price, Director of Research & Grants, 1001 Critical Days Foundation

Huge thanks to Samantha Callan OBE and Lord Farmer for revealing this milestone via a Parliamentary Question https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2025-10-13/hl10891

At The 1001 Critical Days Foundation, we’ll continue our work to improve how "dad data" is collected, shared and used, because better data means better engagement, support and safeguarding for families.

This World Prematurity Day 💜 we have Lauren's story
In her own words Lauren describes her experience of when Zachary was born and the months following.

Attention - the following story contains details you may find upsetting.

"The nicu journey is a world that you never knew existed and a world that you don’t want anyone else to experience. However long your journey lasts it definitely changes you as no parents should ever have to give birth and not have your baby with you.

For us it was completely unexpected as Zachary came suddenly at 22weeks and 6 days weighing 522g at Doncaster hospital. The staff were incredible and ran into action with very little notice. They did an incredible job to stabilise him and then Embrace were called to take us to a level 3 hospital who had the needed expertise to look after him at such an early gestation. Embrace is an ambulance service who transport babies and children between hospitals and they had such skill and knowledge to transfer Zachary to hull safely. We were then in Hull Nicu for 5 months while Zachary fought hard to overcome so many obstacles. We lost count of how many times he was taken off the ventilator and then put back on, blood transfusions, steroids, antibiotics, scans and then two operations. Zachary’s lungs really struggled and it took a long time for him to work down the breathing support levels. Once he had an operation on his two hernias he turned a corner and became much stronger so that when we left hospital in February he was only on a tiny bit of oxygen. He was on home oxygen for 3 months before coming off which is incredible. Due to the amount of oxygen he had needed he suffered from ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) which affects the eyes and can cause blindness but luckily they test the babies weekly and the high level staff at hull were able to inject and perform laser eye surgery to save his sight.

We moved to Doncaster in January to focus on reducing his oxygen levels and develop feeding. We left Doncaster in February fully breastfed and on a small amount of oxygen. He had fought so hard and overcome all the difficulties to beat the 3/10 statistics for being born so prematurely.

The care Zachary and us as a family received at Hull and Doncaster was incredible and thank you will never be enough! The skill level of consultants, Drs and nurses is remarkable and they never gave up on him, often loosing sleep over what they could do next. The love and care we received as a family is something I’ve never experienced as they honestly do everything they can to make the experience that little bit easier and help celebrate those tiny but huge milestones. We were a 3 hour round trip from Zachary in Hull and travelled back and forth daily whilst still looking after our little girl at home and my partner working. The staff were incredible at sending photos, giving me updates and gaining my trust that my baby was safe with them as walking out those doors every day without your baby is the hardest thing I have ever done.

Leaving the hospital after 6 months is an incredibly difficult time as the trauma begins to hit and the realisation of being the one to now look after them sinks in. The support I received from Perinatal Wellbeing Health Visiting team has enabled me to enjoy my little miracle and make small steps to overcoming my trauma and become the best Mummy I can be for my family.

He is now 14 months old (10 corrected) and even though he is still very tiny he is growing stronger everyday and reaching those milestones we never thought were possible"

NICU MAMA
“My journey started when I was pregnant in 2019 and Olivia was born at 24 weeks gestation around covid time in 2020 sadly Olivia didn’t make it after 3 days. .. fast forward to 2024 after struggling to keep a pregnancy we decided IVF would be an option .. little we didn’t know that Amelia would come so early in December 2024 at 27 weeks, she spent 60 days in NICU 🎀
The trauma and grief
- after Amelia got discharged from NICU, I was emotional wreck adjusting being a new mummy and grieving for Olivia who isn’t here. after joining NICU coffee morning that’s when Perinatal support came from at first I was so nervous joining and since then … that’s how I met Joanne and Andrea they have supported me ever since.
I feel like by coming into this group have really supported me well and lots of things have helped me by coming to this group for support with one to one & other mums.
Since being with Perinatal group I’ve seen myself grow as more confident person and I’m so proud of how far I’ve progressed. All thanks to Joanne & Andrea “
