Our Story
I became a mother for the first time in 2004. Despite what I thought had been some reasonable birth preparation (a few books, a couple of antenatal sessions at the local hospital and a bit of pregnancy yoga) I was in no way prepared for those precious, challenging first few months. With hindsight there was a lot I would have done differently. No one had talked to me about birth choices, my partner didn’t know how to support me, I didn’t know what would help with breastfeeding and I lacked a local support network of ‘mum’ friends. I look back at that period and want to tell myself: ‘Book the decent antenatal course. Ask for help. Follow your instincts. Put the crazy baby book down’. In between that experience and having my second baby things had shifted. I had reflected. I had learned. And I knew how to tune in to what was right for me. The seed of what was to become my new career had been planted.
I knew I wanted to do more to support new mothers after my own experience. I trained as a baby massage instructor shortly after having my son and really enjoyed facilitating the richness of conversation the mothers would have. The opportunity then came up to train as an Antenatal Practitioner with NCT and I jumped at the chance, after two and a half years of training I gained my licence to practise. The training with NCT is above and beyond. After facilitating antenatal courses for several years, in 2016 I did further training to specialise as a Postnatal Practitioner and also run NCT Parent courses. I then started offering my own workshops and courses which I continue to develop. Alongside this work I also represent the views of maternity service users at University Hospital Wales on the Maternity Services Liaison Committee (MSLC).
If I could sum up what I do in one sentence it would be: ‘Bringer of calm, clarity and confidence to new parents’.
