In Specialist Military Units, there was an unspoken split:
A-Streamers and B-Streamers.
A-Streamers were on the prestige path, high-profile roles, future leadership, medals, visibility.
B-Streamers?
They didn’t quite follow the script.
They often took roles that weren’t as shiny, but were just as vital.
Often more real.
I was blessed with being offered the A-Stream.
More than once.
I was advised, strongly, to take that path and often warned and ridiculed for the career choices I was about to make by senior colleagues.
But something deeper always pulled me the other way.
Not out of rebellion.
But out of alignment.
It didn’t always make sense on paper.
But it felt true.
At the time, I questioned myself.
But now, with distance and perspective, I see it more clearly:
The B-Streamers were often the ones who stayed closest to who they truly were.
Not chasing status, but standing in service, with integrity.
And this realisation came up again recently with one of my retreat members.
That much of the pain we carry, regret, comparison, disappointment, isn’t really about failure.
It’s about not fitting into a path that was never ours in the first place.
When you see that… you can stop carrying it.
You can let go.
You can come home.
