🦸‍♂️What’s your superpower when rehabbing⚡️

I am not sitting here trying to be a Strength &Conditioning coach. But during my time as being a physio I have learnt from some of the best and understand some basic principles that affect my practice.

There have been many patients that I have seen who have been given the 3 sets of 10 reps phenomenon for every exercise.

🤯 this shows to me the person prescribing does not understand what they want to achieve from adaptation.

I dumb it down into four stages;

1. Strength Endurance - can we tolerate capacity in our tissues.
2. Hypertrophy - increase cross sectional areas of mass.
3. Strength 💪🏻- how much force/weight you can move.
4. Power - how quickly you can move this force.

These principles are basics and easy to remember. Let’s not be boring and lets start bringing some science to the table.

And oh, if you don’t know how to, ask people like to get your athletes where they need to be. Make sure you are preparing your athletes to excel and no re injure.

💥Hip Mobility Does it Work?💥

⚠️I feel people easily say a hip is “tight”. We know a mobile hip allows us to function for day to day activities and sport. It allows us to adapt a power based position efficiently to prepare us for change of direction and generating power. Along side a mobile ankle, a stable knee and a stable trunk.

⛔️However, we underestimate the reasons why a hip can be stiff and in turn can be making a patient/athlete problem worst.

☑️Is it a bony block?
☑️Is it soft tissue related?
☑️Is the patient guarding from an intro-articular issue?
☑️Is it unstable?

🤯Don’t just assume a stiff hip can be magically mobilised. It could be like shutting a closed door or trying to rip its hinges off.

Thoughts??💭🤔

Following on from yesterday this is what reality during rehab really looks like.

Instagram is full of “perfection” and physios/rehabbers/S&C always post the pretty stuff.

However, rehab is not perfect and definitely not pretty sometimes. I am a big believer that rehab is a learning curve via mistakes with a low risk of re-injury. It also adds more organised chaos to athletes/clients having to get themselves of a sh*tty situation and builds confidence.

Question: Is this imperfection, perfection?

lwdonovan completing end of stage rehab for ACL.

1. Unpredicted landing mechanics
2. Shadowing and cat and mouse
3. Athletic development - aka gymnastics.

It doesn’t have to look pretty, organised chaos is key. *Social distancing was applied*

We are offering video calls to continue effective care and rehab pathways so you can enjoy this weather in a safe and healthy environment.

Could not resist being outside in this weather today. Good space for rehab demonstration.

From hip resurfacing to back on the slopes within 3 months. Dedication to rehab gets you to this point. With a bit of in the mix.

Progression of rehab with objective assessment has allowed the return to skiing with reduced risk of injury and ability to perform.

This is a huge Myth amongst the general population and people that do not work with youth. I get many queries all the time of “should my child be lifting weights” or “ when should they lift weights “🏋️‍♂️.

Strength training helps to build resilience to load and in turn, reduces the risk of injuries.

It also helps keep the adolescent awkwardness at bay when growth is occurring or has just occurred.

Of course strength training programmes must be prescribed by someone who has experience in this field to ensure it’s the right thing at that time.

Early stages of ACLR rehab. Use of blood flow restriction and to get the quad working as unable to load at this stage due to function.

Added extra of some athletic development movement patterns as .acl .gill has not had any exposure to sport through a vital maturation period.

Shoulder rehab for an a traumatic instability. Having to think outside of the box due to the lack of elbow extension on the left arm.

Rotator cuff muscles do not get strong with your typical banded rotations by your side. Put the arm under load and in an unstable pattern to “fire that cuff”.

End stage rehab with following patella fracture and surgical repair. His end goal is to return to playing hockey and cricket without restriction of pain. On testing there was evident difference in Limb Symmetry (LSI) on single leg drop jumps. This pushing our rehab down a direction of reactivity and power.

Without objective testing we are unable to be specific with rehab potential to fulfil return to sport criteria.
