People with long-term health conditions are being urged to get their flu vaccination this winter to help protect them from serious illness.

Flu can be very serious, especially for those with conditions like asthma and diabetes. The vaccine lowers the risk of infection, reduces severity and helps prevent the spread.

Pictured on the right is Charlotte at her sickest, hospitalised with flu last year. In her own words: “I felt ice cold but I was burning up, my temperature was so high.” Charlotte has underlying health conditions, and while she’s since recovered, she now never misses her flu jab and is urging others to do the same.

Someone will die today waiting for an organ transplant. The waiting list for transplants increases every year, now totalling more than 8,000 people including babies and children.

Most of us would accept an organ if we needed one. Two minutes now can save up to nine lives.

Since 2015, Wales has operated a deemed consent legislation, where an individual is presumed to consent to organ donation upon death unless they have explicitly stated otherwise or are in an excluded group. Despite this, the support of families is crucial as they may override a decision. This is why we want everyone to talk to their loved ones and register their decision to donate.

Confirm your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register. It's the best thing you'll do today.

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day. No one should face this alone.

Living with Alzheimer’s or Dementia can make everyday life more challenging, especially when combined with other health conditions. At Care & Repair Cymru, our Managing Better service helps older people to stay safe, independent, and well in their own homes.

Our Managing Better service can help with things like:

• Carry out home assessments to make homes safer and easier to live in.
• Arrange minor adaptations and things like sensor light, specialist lighting for sight loss, or step adjustments.
• Provide support with welfare benefits and financial advice.
• Help carers navigate multiple agencies and feel less overwhelmed.

Our caseworker recently supported Mrs Z, a 79-year-old lady living with dementia as well as sight and hearing loss. Life was becoming overwhelming for her and her husband, who is her main carer.

When they were referred to our Managing Better service, we were able to help:

• Installed sensor lights so Mrs Z could move safely around the house at night.
• Adjusted the front steps so she could use her walking frame independently.
• Helped them claim a Council Tax exemption they didn’t know about.

Her husband said: “Thank you so much for what you have done so far and to know that you will be there in the future if we need any more support, is a great relief.”

We’re proud to deliver Managing Better in partnership with the Alzheimer's Society RNIB Cymru Stroke Association Wales RNID ensuring the right support is available at the right time for those living with dementia, sight or hearing loss, or the effects of stroke.
