The concern of the general public about STROKE:
A cerebrovascular accident popularly called Stroke by the layperson is a serious emergency medical condition managed by the neurologist, neurosurgeon, and physiotherapists.
The condition is only equaled by heart conditions and malignancies.
All parts of the human are well represented in the brain and the tongue, thumb, and toe are the structural body parts best represented on the cerebral cortex of the brain.
Bleeding into the brain causes a condition called cerebrovascular accident or stroke.
Because of their high representation in the brain the tongue, thumb (upper extremities and big toe (lower extremities) are the first structures to manifest the effects of Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) or stroke.
Slurred or altered speech, loss of consciousness, weakness, and/or reduced sensation of the extremities are some of the features of stroke.
It is called a Cerebrovascular accident because it can occur without warning.
Road traffic accidents causing head injury can manifest with features of stroke such as loss of consciousness.
Blood in the brain either from vessel rupture within the brain or as a result of road traffic accident (RTA) or a blow to the head can cause impaired consciousness. Or if any part of the brain is deprived of its blood supply that part of the body represented on the brain shows the features of stroke.
Stroke can manifest as a transient ischaemic attack, popularly called TIA, and can completely resolve without evidence of permanent damage, e.g. slurred speech, localized loss of sensation, or slipping of the extremities.
When the individual involved in a major or massive stroke survives the attack there are stigmata of the attack as stated above and the roles played by the physiotherapist become very important.
In my next discussion, I shall cover the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and general management of stroke patients.
