The herbal medicine valerian may have been the world's first epilepsy drug, an Australian neurologist says. Emeritus Professor Mervyn Eadie from the University of Queensland looked through the historical evidence to find the herb had been used to control seizures since the 1500s.
Valerian increases the amount of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. As a neurotransmitter, GABA inhibits unwanted nervous system activity. Studies have shown that increased levels of GABA in the brain lead to falling asleep faster and experiencing better sleep
