Bedford Hospital Maternity This is the official page of Bedford Hospital's Maternity Department. Please note that no medical advice can be provided on this page.

If you have any questions or queries about your pregnancy please inform your GP or Midwife directly. Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is the site managed? This site does not have a dedicated team to service the enquiries made through it. The maternity staff who post the responses are doing so in addition to their main roles

2. What can I post on the site? Please remember that Facebook is a publ

ic forum and is not the appropriate place for us to discuss specific cases or complaints. In such cases we may message you directly to inform you on how best to resolve your issue. Whilst we encourage healthy debate and appreciate that our users will have opinions on current events, we ask everyone to remember that this site has a large and diverse user base, so please be respectful when making your comments

3. What is your deletion policy? Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will remove any comments that are considered to be:
- Offensive
- Abusive
- Threatening
- Deliberately insensitive or inflammatory
- Contain links
We may remove posts that have no connection to the Trust as this site is for local healthcare information. It is inappropriate for us to comment on or host debates about actions being undertaken by other Trusts, other professional bodies or other countries. Where possible we will try to inform a user that their post has been deleted and offer an explanation as to why. However, as this site is not run by a dedicated team, we may not always be able to do this

4. How can I contact you if I don’t want to post my questions on here? You can private message us (maternity) using Facebook Messenger. Again please note that messages are not monitored 24 hours a day. Alternatively, you can contact our PALS team (patient advice and liaison service) via email at PALS@bedfordhospital.nhs.uk or by phone on 01234 795814

Our Trust Charity helps to fund additional facilities and equipment, support medical research and provide the extras that make being in hospital more comfortable and a less distressing experience for the patients and families in our care.

There are three appeals for our maternity services – the Little Feet Appeal in aid of the move into the new build at the L&D and the Butterfly Appeals for both sites.

For more information or to support, visit www.bedfordshirehospitals.nhs.uk/charity/support-our-appeals/

Are you pregnant and wanting to have your baby at one of our hospitals?

You can make a self-referral, as soon as you find out you are pregnant so that we can start your care. You don’t need to speak to your GP first.

Please contact us if you have not heard from us within 15 working days. If you are more than 9 weeks pregnant please contact us as soon as you have submitted your online referral, so we can process and book you an appointment as soon as possible.

As part of our ‘Meet our team’ series, this is Kayley, Lead Midwifery Clinical Educator.

Kayley joined the Trust in February 2025.

“I am the Lead Midwifery Clinical Educator cross site. This is a new role within the organisation with oversite of both maternity Education teams. Since starting in my role, I have found both teams supportive and innovative. We have worked well together on developing the maternity education packages within the Trust and look forward to developing next year's programme. I have also found the connection between maternity Education and the Trust Education team an amazing foundation grounded in the THRIVE values helping us to build the future for our staff.”

The maternity team at Bedford received a lovely ‘thank you’ recently.

“…I just feel it’s really important to let you know how amazing you all are. I had a baby last year and had the most amazing midwives… They held my hand throughout it all, hugged me and reassured me. The midwife who originally checked my dilation made sure to come up and check on me and meet baby - I think her name was Beth. They were all so amazing and helped me AND my partner (who was having a harder time than me)! One lady was a student and the other had been in the job for a while…

“I also had a baby at Bedford hospital 3.5 years ago, and again, amazing midwives…

“The job you all do is amazing and if I moved across the world I’d still want to give birth at Bedford Hospital.

“Thank you so much for delivering my two beautiful children so healthily.”

A number of screening tests are available during pregnancy and after your baby has been born, to try and find any health conditions that could affect your or your baby.

This will lead to earlier detection and effective treatment or the opportunity to make informed decisions about your health.

The screening tests offered during pregnancy in England are either ultrasound scans or blood tests, or a combination of both.

For more information visit www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/your-pregnancy-care/screening-tests/

You should begin to feel your baby move between 16 to 24 weeks of pregnancy.

However if this is your first baby, you may not feel movements until after 20 weeks.

The movements can feel like a gentle swirling or fluttering. As your pregnancy progresses, you may feel kicks and jerky movements.

If by 24 weeks you have not felt your baby move, tell your midwife. If you have any concerns, please call Triage on 01234 795805. They'll check your baby's heartbeat and movements.

For more information, view the ‘Feeling your baby move is a sign that they are well’ leaflet from Tommy’s Pregnancy Hub on our website: https://www.bedfordshirehospitals.nhs.uk/patient-information-leaflets/feeling-your-baby-move-is-a-sign-that-they-are-well/
