🥶 There's a spell of particularly cold weather on its way 🥶

The Met Office has issued a cold weather alert with freezing temperatures and potentially severe overnight frosts across the UK from 6pm today, Wednesday December 7, until Monday, December 12. A warning has also been issued for ice and possibly snow showers later this week in Scotland and the north of England 🌫 😮‍💨

Cold weather can have serious consequences for health. Older people and those with heart or lung conditions can be particularly at risk 🫁 ❤️‍🩹

🏡 If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you should heat your home to a temperature that is comfortable for you. Try to heat the rooms you use most, such as the living and bedroom, to at least 18°C if you can and keep your bedroom windows closed at night.

Check you’ve got enough medication and food in case it’s harder to leave the house.
And if you are worried about your health, you can contact your local pharmacy, or 111 or your GP for advice and support. 🧑🏻‍⚕️ In an emergency dial 999 🆘

Please try to stay warm and look out for family, friends and neighbours wherever possible 👵🏻

We’re supporting the Digital Carers campaign led by Healthwave to encourage people to use the NHS App in Walsall.

We want more people in Walsall to download the NHS App and discover the benefits of all thing’s health in one place.

The campaigns focused on parents of under 5s to be able to link up their family's health profiles and the 18–24-year-olds to explore its trusted health A-Z.

It also supports a new type of carer - the digital carer. A new study by Healthwave revealed that up to 1/3 of people now have digital caring responsibilities for an older person.

But this study also revealed that while these new wave carers are doing what they can, they also feel they could benefit from help and training to make them better at this new type of caring.

Did you know? 🤧
A cold is a mild viral infection of the nose, throat and upper airways. It’s very common, particularly in winter, and usually clears up on its own within a week or two.

Colds are caused by viruses that are easily spread from person to person, and the germs carried from the infection can live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours.

Your pharmacist can help you choose the best medicine for your symptoms.
Common treatments include painkillers, decongestant sprays or tablets and cough medicines. 💊😮‍💨

These can all be purchased over the counter with the help of your local pharmacist in Dudley and without a prescription ✅

Are you feeling hesitant about one, or both, of the NHS winter vaccines?

Flu and COVID-19 can both cause serious illness and spread more easily in winter when we are more likely to be mixing more indoors.

Health experts are warning of a potentially bad flu season alongside a projected wave of COVID-19 cases.

Vaccines are the best protection we have this winter. It’s easy for us to pass on COVID-19 or flu viruses without knowing. Eligible people will be offered a COVID-19 booster and flu vaccine to help protect them from getting seriously ill from the viruses.

Speak to your local pharmacy in Dudley to arrange a vaccination as soon as possible.
