- Richard Dutton attended the Driving and Mobility Centre (West of England) for an assessment for fitness to drive, twelve years after a serious vehicle collision resulted in partial loss of vision.

In 2006, Richard was involved in a head-on collision with a motorist travelling in the opposite direction, who was overtaking six cars simultaneously. The impact was so severe that Richard spent the following month in the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxfordshire. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by the force of the sudden head-on impact resulted in Homonymous Hemianopia – a visual field loss on the same side of both eyes. It is often seen as a result of strokes and traumatic brain injuries due to the way vision is represented in the brain.

With the help of Driving and Mobility Centre (West of England) Richard is back on the road and enjoying his independence.

- East Anglian DriveAbility ensures new driving future for James following severe spinal injuries.

East Anglian DriveAbility (EAD), one of Driving Mobility’s UK assessment centres, has enabled new driving possibilities for James Kipling from Kings Lynn, after a motorbike accident resulted in traumatic injuries to his spine.

James, age 24, comments: “I felt quite nervous when I arrived at EAD but I was very impressed from the start. The Centre staff ran through my medical records and assessed my physical and cognitive abilities and then asked me to try a static assessment rig. This is a driving simulator that can be fitted with different adaptations to match individual requirements. I was able to operate the accelerator and brake from the steering wheel, which gave me a good idea of how I could drive a car whist in a safe, controlled environment.”

William Crangle was referred to the William Merritt Centre for a Driving Assessment following a stroke which reduced his strength and movement in his left arm.

He received a recommendation to utilise a secondary control device called the Lodgesons Lollipop switching unit, which was installed on the right-hand side of the steering wheel. This unit provided assistance to the driver in operating various functions such as steering, wipers, lights, indicators, and the horn.

During the driving assessment, an Approved Driving Instructor demonstrated the usage of the adaptation and suggested that William undergo additional training to learn how to drive with the adaptation. Furthermore, they aided him in accessing a grant program specifically designed for driving assessments, which covered the expenses for training and the installation of the adaptation in his own vehicle.

We're pleased to say that William is now happily back to driving independently. Well done William Merritt Centre for all your hard work and congratulations to William.

In our 'Driving with a Disability' series, we take a look at what to do if you have Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson’s is a medical condition affecting parts of the brain. Therefore this condition can present in a variety of different ways such as:
⚪ Uncontrolled movements such as shaking
⚪ Slower movements
⚪ Stiffness of movement
⚪ Reduced movement
⚪ Shuffling when walking
⚪ Postural and balance changes

👉 Find out how Driving Mobility can help you continue driving with Parkinson's disease here: https://www.drivingmobility.org.uk/driving-with-a-disability/parkinsons-disease/

Parkinson's UK Parkinson's Improvement Program

Driving relies on a mix of mental abilities which need to be undertaken quickly, safely and consistently. In the early or mild stages of the condition, the person may still be able to drive safely as driving is a well learned skill.
