90%of the visible signs of ageing are due to UV damage . UVA is mainly responsible for this and found throughout the year. UVA triggers enzymes that breaks down collagen and elastin and destroys Vitamin A . This becomes more visible over time in form of sagging skin and wrinkles. UV radiation also directly damages our DNA increasing risk of skin cancer . UV radiation is a carcinogen. Immediate sun-damage is noted as redness or sunburn whilst long- term changes are visible as changes in colour and skin texture displaying as sun- spots, irregular pigmentation and skin colour, leathery and lack- lustre skin with furrows and coarse wrinkles

Solution- daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 minimum . If you burn more easily then higher SPF strength will protect your skin better . SPF in make-up or moisturisers is not a substitute . Invest in a lone good quality SPF .

Peri- oral rejuvenation…. My most popular treatment request for women after the age of 50.

Women age very differently to men especially once hits . We don’t have beards to hide behind either 🙈.

Unfortunately we start to see marionette lines and lip lines that can make us look sad and wrinkled especially if compounded by volume loss in lips and upper face.

Here we have managed to subtly rejuvenate and restore the original features but at the same time maintaining a natural appearance.

🚭Smoking and ni****ne 🚭.

Smoking causes skin damage by decreasing blood flow to the skin creating oxygen and nutrient deprivation in the skin . Those who smoke have fewer collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis, which causes skin to become slack, hardened and less elastic. Smoke causes damage to collagen and elastin in lung tissue and may do so in skin as well. The shrinking of skin by ni****ne may contribute to wrinkling as well .

This effect is dose-dependent so the more or longer you smoke the greater the damage and the damage is sometimes irreversible . Smoking actually causes more wrinkling than UV damage.
Premature ageing due to smoking is noted not to improve even after treatment with HRT, use of sunscreen and pigment-controlling products.

Smoking also increases the risk of melanoma as it can affect how our skin cells multiply and increased free radical formation.

Solution - stop smoking or try to reduce it at the least . Seek out for support if you need some help with this . If you live in Derbyshire then self-refer yourself to Live Life Better Stop Smoking Service for free or speak to your GP or Pharmacist.

Don’t you think it makes perfect sense 😀
People who practise daily self-care are often the ones that do better in life in my experience. Put yourself first - it’s not selfish but it’s the only way to care for others . Self-care is not just about how you look but how you feel too .. mental & physical health go hand in hand.
I am guilty as charged but it’s one thing I want to change in 2024 . What about you ? .
