A drop-in story share event will be held on Saturday 20 September 11am - 2.30pm at Pontefract Museum for the Pontefract Hermitage and Dispensary digital project. Do you have any memories or photographs to share?

The Pontefract Dispensary was established in 1812 and was built on top of a much older structure – the Pontefract Hermitage. This was cut into the sandstone of the hillside overlooking what is now valley gardens in the 14th century. The hermitage is now a scheduled ancient monument.

The dispensary provided medical advice and treatment to the poor people of the area (in the days before the NHS) and was funded by local subscriptions. It was extended in 1891 and again in 1923, when the King Edward VII memorial wing was opened. This included a two new wards, a kitchen and a mortuary. By the 1920s, the site had become known as the Pontefract General Infirmary (PGI) and extended further down the hill. The PGI was a voluntary hospital, paid for by subscriptions and donations, until it was absorbed into the new NHS in July 1948. In the later 20th century, the building had a variety of uses, including a dermatology clinic and an A&E department. PGI merged with Pinderfields hospital to become a single hospital trust in 1997. The dispensary building finally closed in 2011.

The new digital project, led by One To One Development Trust, will create a new multi-media digital interpretation of this important part of Wakefield District’s history, including recording and sharing people’s memories of both the hermitage and the dispensary through a new digital platform.

Celebrating another successful year, the Project SEARCH programme continues to transform lives by offering a year-long supported internship for young adults aged 17–25 with autism and/or learning disabilities.

Delivered in partnership with our Trust, Kirklees Council, Wakefield Council, Kirklees College, Wakefield College, and other local organisations, the programme delivers real work experience, employability training, and independent living skills.

At graduation events at Pinderfields and Dewsbury Hospitals where the internships took place, this year’s fantastic interns celebrated their successful completion of the programme. They were joined by their families, mentors, job coaches, curriculum leads, and NHS colleagues who supported their placements.

The family of one of this year’s Project SEARCH interns said:
“Project SEARCH has changed our lives! We did not know what the future would look like in regard to employment but can honestly say that it has been the best thing that could have come to us and at the right time.

“As a family, we did not know where to turn to next with education and employment, so to have not only secured a job but to have a career is amazing.”

If you or someone you know could benefit from taking part in the programme in 2026, please visit https://bit.ly/project-search-2025 for more information.

Ground breaking NHS innovation from Mid Yorkshire clinician slashes surgery infections, wins global prize

Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust’s Director of Innovation and Consultant antimicrobial pharmacist Dr Stuart Bond has been recognised on the global stage, bagging an internationally acclaimed award, on the back of implementing clinician innovation project that reduces infections by 71 per cent using pioneering nose probes.

Stuart was honoured with one of the world’s most prestigious awards for his leadership in a groundbreaking NHS-first project that has slashed surgical site infections. This achievement bagged him the President’s Award from the International Photodynamic Association (IPA).

The accolade is reserved for individuals whose work is transforming healthcare through photodynamic therapy. Stuart has led the UK’s first NHS deployment of Steriwave, which is light-activated nasal therapy that destroys harmful bacteria before a patient undergoes surgery without using any antibiotics. The pilot at Pinderfields and Pontefract Hospitals targeted patients undergoing hip and knee replacements and dramatically reduced surgical site infections (SSIs) over a six month period and has now been rolled out broader.

The project has also been shortlisted for the HSJ Patient Safety Award – early-stage patient safety innovation of the year category, being hosted in Manchester in September.

Dr Stuart Bond said: “It’s an incredible honour to be recognised internationally, but the real achievement is for our patients. This therapy protects them from serious infections, speeds up recovery, and reduces the need for antibiotics. We’ve shown the NHS can lead the world in tackling challenges such as this.”

Dr. Colin Hopper, President of the IPA, who presented the award said:
“Dr. Bond and his team at Mid Yorks were the first to operationalize photodisinfection within the NHS. Their findings not only demonstrate the clinical value of this approach but also underscore its importance in an era of rising multi-drug resistance, positioning the UK's NHS as a global leader in antibiotic stewardship and patient safety.”

Following the award-winning innovation, the Trust is now exploring wider use of the technology across other surgeries and settings and scaling broader within the NHS.

The Trust’s MY Professional Development Education Unit has recently welcomed new graduate nurses through a series of graduate nurse programme workshops. Covering key topics such as time management, wellbeing, and accountability, the sessions support graduates as they transition from student to registered nurse during their 12-month preceptorship.

As part of our 2025 intake, 75 graduates we offered posts to have already started, and 69 will start in the coming months.

Reflecting on the programme, graduate nurse Diya said:

"I’ve had a wonderful experience with the start of the graduate nurse programme. The first day was incredibly supportive and gave me practical insights that really helped ease the transition from student nurse to registered nurse. It was also a great opportunity to connect with other new graduates and learn from experienced staff, which boosted my confidence and motivation as I began this next stage of my career."

We are committed to supporting our graduates to develop their skills and confidence throughout the first year of practice and beyond. 💙

This , Jess said: "I just wanted to share my birth experience, which took place at Pinderfields Hospital.

"The whole experience, from start to finish was amazing. I opted for an elective c-section due to a horrific pregnancy and felt incredibly nervous as this was my first surgery. From the moment I arrived, I was put at ease by all the staff I met.

"Baby Tilly Grace was born at 8:51pm on the 21st January, weighing 7lb 7oz and was born to “Girls Just Wanna Have Funâ€đŸ™ˆđŸŽ¶ The whole theatre team were amazing. My midwife who looked after me on the recovery ward was incredible, helping me and my partner so much after the birth. It was an amazing experience, and I would 100% recommend Pinderfields to anyone having a babyđŸ‘¶đŸŒ

"I’d also like to specifically shout out my community midwife, Amelia Lyle. She was the best of the best. She always took time during appointments to listen to me rant and moan, and ask the most ridiculous questions, I’m sure. When Tilly was born, she came to see us after and check we were doing ok. I will never forget her and her kindness❀."
