Functional Anatomy Functional Anatomy is about showing the body in a joined up way through dissection and function.

Our content explores not just human anatomy, but aims to explain the connected nature of our tissues and why we move and function the way we do. This is not classical anatomy and the emphasis isn’t on named parts. Instead the focus Is more on understanding how each part of us works with the others to create body wide functional movement. Anyone who works with the body, either in therapy or movemen

t, will find seeing the body in this way an incredible shift in what they have learned previously. Julian is a skilled and experienced communicator and brings people to this new way of thinking in a careful and accessible way.

The human dissection course on the Shoulder and Neck that I created last year, is now being rolled out on my Mighty Community Site, Touch Move Heal, and is included in the membership fee of just £12.50 a month.

It features around seven hours of incredible dissection content, looking at movement, restriction, conjoined structures and the joints of the shoulder. It will enhance your understanding of this area, no matter what level of therapist you are.

It's not a traditional anatomical approach but instead aims to show you what isn't featured in the books or videos and will help you visualise how your clients move.

Membership is just £12.50 a month and includes Bowen workshops dozens of webinars as well as lots of other dissection images and videos, added to regularly.

Sign up now and get a FREE seven day trial.

Touch Move Heal is a one stop shop for anyone who is involved in the practice of Manual or Movement Therapy in any form. If for example you're a massage therapist, Bowen therapist, chiropractor, Osteopath, Rolfer, Physiotherapist/Physical Therapist or work with your hands to help people move or redu...

The advantage of not having to dissect in a specific way allows us to see the body in ways that almost defy what traditional anatomy suggests and gives us the opportunity to see function from a different angle.

I've created a new section looking at the upper body connections and how the separation of upper limbs shows functions we could never have thought about.

Check it out!

I've added a new section in the Transformational Anatomy space, to look at some of the footage I have of the lungs being inflated. Gil Hedley always used to do this with a turkey baster but the power behind an Ambi-bag gives better inflation without the risk of any returning air!

The thing that always surprises people is just how much space the lungs occupy in the thorax, together with the close relationship the heart has with both the lungs and the diaphragm, which shares a tendonous connection with the fibrous pericardium of the heart.

Some of the videos in this section will also look at the lungs inflating whilst still inside the thoracic space, so look out for those as well as the hours of dissection videos, Bowen content and all the webinars from 2024, as well as a community of like minded people. All for just £12.95 per month

Come and have a look and enjoy a free trial.

The thickened tissue at the base of the back, the thoracolumbar fascia, has long been a source of fascination for me. After thirty years of hands on treatment, I'm convinced that this tissue is the source of nearly all the back pain I have ever witnessed or treated.

Today it's the starting point for assessment, measurement and treatment and given its enormous range of muscular and bony attachments, it's not hard to understand why. As to whether we can change it or not, that's another story, but it's certainly an area to discuss more.

Check out my recent thoughts on this and my plans to take a deep dive into a greater understanding of this tissue.

One of my favourite elements to play with during dissection, is my hand held DinoScope microscope. It's an incredible tool that allows us to see up close the relationships between fascia, muscle blood vessels and observe the movement of fluid around all of them.

I've posted a very cool video in the free members section of Touch Move Heal, so check it out. Link below.

An 18 minute video now available in the Transformational Anatomy Membership section of my Mighty Network Community formed part of an introduction to a scar tissue dissection class. Working on a sectioned pelvis with Hannah Poulton, scar specialist Physiotherapist we first palpate the specimen which has clearly undergone extensive surgeries in her life. Later videos show just the extent of the scarring within the hip and pelvis, but the aim here is to show the depth of the tissues we work on.

The video shows my scalpel dropping through the skin and into the superficial, adipose layer, and examining the fibrous and connected nature of this incredible tissue. Using my microscope and showing side by side images, we are able to precisely see how tissues around the buttock are held firmly in place by the network of fascia running through and descending down towards the muscle.

Eventually the dissection goes deep enough to reveal the first glimpse of muscle and deep fascia, but for the moment, this is a chance for us to truly understand in a way you may never have seen, the complexity of the superficial tissues that surround every aspect of our form and which dictate more feeling and behaviour than we can ever be aware of.

Membership of just £12.50 per month gives you access to dozens of dissection videos, webinars, workshops and regularly updated content.
