Proudly working together to deliver the best possible services for a healthier Grampian. NHS services for the half-million people who live in Grampian are provided by NHS Grampian, and are overseen by one single NHS Board. The single Grampian NHS Board is responsible for improving the health of the Grampian population, and for delivering the health care required. The Board must oversee the taking-

forward of Scotland's national health agenda, tailored to the needs of the Grampian population of half-a-million people spread over 3,000 square miles of city, town, village and rural communities. The Board is supported from headquarters at Summerfield House in Aberdeen. Senior managers for the functions which cover the whole of Grampian are based here, including financial overview, corporate planning, and central responsibility for protection and promotion of public health. NHS Grampian consists of acute services, corporate services and three Integrated Joint Boards and works closely with the local authorities. NHS Grampian is also very closely linked with both the University of Aberdeen and The Robert Gordon University, especially in the fields of research, workforce planning and training. Moderation

Starting solids can be exciting and it’s fun to introduce your baby to different foods. But that excitement can soon pass when you’re cleaning up after yet another meal and there are lots of reasons why waiting until around six months is a good idea.

1. Research shows that waiting helps reduce the chance of infections for your baby without having any negative impact on their weight, development or health.

2. Babies don't develop the enzymes they need to digest foods until between 4 - 6 months (and you can't tell by looking if they've done that yet). Waiting ensures they are ready.

3. First foods tend to be bulky for their energy i.e. pureed veg takes up a lot of space for the calories it has. The risk is that if you give your baby too much food too soon you detract from the nutrients & energy of breast or formula milk.

4. Historically, we used to start giving babies solids at around 9 – 10 months. Then the baby food industry was invented and with it pressure to give solid foods earlier with no evidence that was a good idea. Research then showed it was not but it's hard to reverse this messaging.

5. Starting earlier is a slower process as babies aren't physically ready to eat. Babies are so much more in control of the process at 6 months than 4. Research shows that babies who wait until 6 months quickly catch up their friends who started sooner in terms of amount eaten.

Does it have to be exactly 180 days? No. All babies are different and starting solids is a physical skill. Some babies will be ready a little earlier and some a little later. But this means a few days or a week or so around six months. A good test is to see if your baby can sit upright in a highchair and bring some finger food to their mouth and chew it. If they can do this, they’re most likely ready!

You might hear that early solids helps protect against allergies, but the research is complicated. Experts conclude there is no benefit to starting before 6 months. If you've been given different advice because of a health issue, continue to talk to your health professional. But for your average baby? It's easier and better to wait.
