What is Happy Healthy Outdoors all about?

It's simple...I want to get more women outdoors, more often.

Spending time outdoors has made such a difference to my life I want other women to feel better too. It's such an easy fix when you know (like everything 🙄)

So how can I help you feel happier and healthier?

Feeling completely brilliant? That's great.

Feeling not quite as brilliant as you wish you did?

I might be able to help with that. Have you thought about spending more time outdoors? I'm not talking a weekend hiking up mountains, but a few minutes here and there or maybe an afternoon out walking locally. Did you know there's so much evidence to show that spending time outdoors can really help our mental and physical health AND improve our productivity.

Now you could just enjoy a coffee out in the garden or in your local park to feel some of the benefits or you could come on a guided walk with me and a few other women and dust off your map reading skills. And don't worry if you don't have any map reading skills to dust off, I can teach you!

I run monthly Get Out More Walks in villages local to St Neots for small groups of women to enjoy a friendly walk together and learn some skills. If you're interested check in the events listings for the nest events or message me.

Dock leaves!

This may seem obvious to many of us but consider this a reminder that you only know if you know.

What does a dock leaf look like was a frequent question on DofE this year. Many students knew they should find one to help with nettle stings but didn’t know what it was.

This patch grows on my daily walk and they look so lush!

But this post isn’t primarily about plant ID, it’s about reminding us to keep asking about the stuff we don’t know. Don’t be embarrassed, don’t feel inadequate, just ask.

And if someone asks you something that you see as obvious, don’t be dismissive, be kind and share your knowledge freely, obviously 😊

Worrying about getting lost and running out of time?

Just back from a fabulous few days on the Norfolk Coast.

The weather was glorious and the beaches were beautiful.

Early mornings on the beach before it gets busy are my favourite.

I feel completely relaxed and refreshed. It’s so important to take a break and for me, that’s always about time alone in nature 💚

Did you know that spending time outdoors can lead to improved mood and a reduced stress and anxiety?

It's not just that though!

New evidence suggests that exposure to nature also benefits cognitive function including memory, perception, judgement, problem-solving, and imagination.

Pretty impressive.

I need all that!

Did you know that short bursts of running is enough to boost bone health in women?

Just a minute or two is enough to make a difference.

So how about including a couple of short running intervals whilst out on your walk?

Run to play with your dog or to pick up the dog poo when they do it far away from you 😆
Run downhill like a small child
Run to dodge the rain
Or run to get home quickly
Just run a little bit…
It doesn’t need to make you breathless or hay and sweaty, just enough to make your bones stronger.

Or if you don’t fancy running, try including some high-impact bone jolts. Aim for 50 a day.
You could skip for a while, hopscotch your way along the path or even do a few star jumps.

Whatever you choose to do, you’re helping your bones stay stronger for longer.
We all know how important that is so it must be worth a try.
