There is always a different option to take, another day, someone you can talk to, someone that cares…..

💙 The morning after I killed myself, I woke up. I made myself breakfast in bed. I added salt and pepper to my eggs and used my toast for a cheese and bacon sandwich. I squeezed a grapefruit into a juice glass. I scraped the ashes from the frying pan and rinsed the butter off the counter. I washed the dishes and folded the towels.

The morning after I killed myself, I fell in love. Not with the boy down the street or the middle school principal. Not with the everyday jogger or the grocer who always left the avocados out of the bag. I fell in love with my mother and the way she sat on the floor of my room holding each rock from my collection in her palms until they grew dark with sweat. I fell in love with my father down at the river as he placed my note into a bottle and sent it into the current. With my brother who once believed in unicorns but who now sat in his desk at school trying desperately to believe I still existed.

The morning after I killed myself, I walked the dog. I watched the way her tail twitched when a bird flew by or how her pace quickened at the sight of a cat. I saw the empty space in her eyes when she reached a stick and turned around to greet me so we could play catch but saw nothing but sky in my place. I stood by as strangers stroked her muzzle and she wilted beneath their touch like she did once for mine.

The morning after I killed myself, I went back to the neighbors’ yard where I left my footprints in concrete as a two year old and examined how they were already fading. I picked a few daylilies and pulled a few weeds and watched the elderly woman through her window as she read the paper with the news of my death. I saw her husband spit to***co into the kitchen sink and bring her her daily medication.

The morning after I killed myself, I watched the sun come up. Each orange tree opened like a hand and the kid down the street pointed out a single red cloud to his mother.

The morning after I killed myself, I went back to that body in the morgue and tried to talk some sense into her. I told her about the avocados and the stepping stones, the river and her parents. I told her about the sunsets and the dog and the beach.

The morning after I killed myself, I tried to unkill myself, but couldn’t finish what I started. 💙

Why wouldn’t you hold your child if it was upset…..🥰

When our children are upset, the instinct is to rush in with words. We explain, we reason, we try to fix.

We want the lesson to land so badly that we forget this: in the height of big emotions, their brain isn’t open for business.

A child in distress can’t take in logic. Their nervous system is flooded, sounding alarms, searching first for safety.

And safety isn’t found in lectures — it’s found in presence. In a calm voice. In steady arms. In the sense that I am not alone in this storm.

When we hold them — without rushing to correct or control — we’re doing more than comforting. We’re helping their nervous system regulate, showing them what it feels like to move from chaos back to calm.

Only once that storm has passed will they be able to hear the wisdom we so urgently want to give.

Connection first, correction later.

Because children don’t learn best from explanations given at full volume of emotion. They learn best when they feel safe enough to listen.

So when your child is upset: hold your child. Hold your tongue. Hold the space.

The words can wait. The love cannot. ❤️

To everyone struggling with friendships, relationships, jobs etc…..you are allowed to leave!

You’re allowed to leave any story you don’t find yourself in. You’re allowed to leave any story you don’t love yourself in.

You’re allowed to leave a city that has dimmed your light instead of making you shine brighter, you’re allowed to pack all your bags and start over somewhere else and you’re allowed to redefine the meaning of your life.

You’re allowed to quit the job you hate even if the world tells you not to and you’re allowed to search for something that makes you look forward to tomorrow and to the rest of your life.

You’re allowed to leave someone you love if they’re treating you poorly, you’re allowed to put yourself first if you’re settling and you’re allowed to walk away when you’ve tried over and over again but nothing has changed.

You’re allowed to let toxic friends go, you’re allowed to surround yourself with love, and people who encourage and nurture you. You’re allowed to pick the kind of energy you need in your life.

You’re allowed to forgive yourself for your biggest and smallest mistakes and you’re allowed to be kind to yourself, you’re allowed to look in the mirror and actually like the person you see.

You’re allowed to set yourself free from your own expectations.

We sometimes look at leaving as a bad thing or associate it with giving up or quitting, but sometimes leaving is the best thing you can do for yourself.

Leaving allows you to change directions, to start over, to rediscover yourself and the world. Leaving sometimes saves you from staying stuck in the wrong place with the wrong people.

Leaving opens a new door for change, growth, opportunities and redemption.

You always have the choice to leave until you find where you belong and what makes you happy.

You’re even allowed to leave the old you behind and reinvent yourself.

School can raise anxiety to a point where children and teenagers find it very difficult to function properly. Listen to what your child is trying to tell you, don’t butt in, just sit and listen. All the children and young people I have worked with k er the years, the one thing they all had in common when asked ‘What is the most frustrating thing for you growing up ‘, all said ‘nobody wants to listen, they think we have nothing worthwhile to say’! This leads to anger, stress, dry low self/esteem and low self worth. Listening costs nothing at all but can be worth millions that’s trying to tell you something. Take 5 minutes out of your day to listen to what your child is trying to talk to you about, make them feel listened to 🥰
