If you have a s**tty relationship with food then going on a diet will only make it worse!

I can say this coz I've seen it over and over.

There's a better way to get to your health/weight goals.

It involves a change in focus and perspective about food and weight-loss.

Anyone else been pumpkin picking?

We had fun picking some yesterday at Arscott.

Kinsey took a real fancy to this goosebump one. She was hugging it all day yesterday and even cuddled it in bed 😆🎃

We managed to persuade her not to take it on her day out with the grandparents today luckily.

Hoping she'll let us carve it, as that's the plan for tomorrow - we have 4 big pumpkins to carve and 3 mini ones.

Do you like carving a jack o'lantern? What design are you going for this year?

I haven't even thought about it yet - hoping to get some inspiration by tomorrow 😅🎃

It's easy to get seduced by the promises from the dieting industry. 😏

You're not the only one looking for a quick-fix to lose weight.

The problem with following the latest fad to lose weight quickly is that it makes it worse long-term. Fast weight-loss isn't healthy or sustainable. When you restrict your eating too much, you end up bigger in the long-term. Coz you can't stick to that diet forever, it's too strict and when you come off it you're likely to overdo it coz 'you're free!' 🙈

Before you know it you've piled ALL the weight back on again, plus a bit more! Only now you're obsessed with food and you feel like you can't look at the treats without gaining weight.😔

Ditch all that dieting and focus on making tweaks to your normal eating habits - it's so much easier to stick to forever. It's also healthier and more fun, coz it means you can enjoy the treats like cake & chocolate.😍

When Rachel* first came to see me she was frustrated. She'd tried ALL the diets to lose weight & ended up 4 sizes bigger than when she started.

She already ate regular, balanced meals throughout the day; that wasn't the issue.

But every evening she turned to chocolate & wine to unwind or treat herself. She was ashamed of how much she'd get through & to start with, she wasn't entirely truthful about how much that was.

She also admitted that whenever things got tough she turned to chocolate/biscuits to feel better. It never helped.

No diet-plan was ever going to address her struggles. In fact, by demonising the chocolate, biscuits & wine -- labelling them as bad/naughty/banned -- the dieting & slimming-clubs made it worse.

Every diet she failed, left her reaching for choc/wine more & more. The bigger she got the less exercise she did. She was embarrassed of her body. It all seemed too much for her to get control of.

We started small; looking at more helpful ways she could relax & unwind. We planned ways to cope & deal with issues instead of using food as a crutch. Of course she could enjoy the wine & chocolate, but she learnt she didn't need to have it all the time.

The more she practiced, the easier it got.

Dieting makes it worse; it's time to tweak things instead.

Do you think you lack the willpower to lose weight & keep it off forever?

I disagree.

You don't lack willpower at all.

You're just trying to change too much and that makes it too hard to stick to.

(Not your fault btw, the dieting industry makes you think the only way to do it is to follow their drastic or complicated plans and if you can't stick to it then it's your own fault)

D'you know what would help you more than stressing about 'willpower'?

Focus on self-motivation instead.

Tune into WHY you want to make changes. What's your goal and why would getting there make life better for you? 🤔

Use your 'why' to drive you, especially when things get tough. But don't wait until those rough days. Remind yourself everyday what you're aiming for and why you want to get there. It keeps you focused then.

Forget willpower - it's just another part of that dieting mentality that's holding you back.

What would be the point in feeling guilty for all the cake I've eaten recently?!

I made cake for my husband's birthday at the weekend. Before that I decided I needed to use up some brown bananas so I made choco banana buns to take to the PTA meeting. I also made a cake for my mum's birthday the other weekend and the week before that I made cakes for some friends who came to visit!

Yep I've had waaaay too much cake recently, but nope I feel zero guilt.

I hear people all the time talk about how they were 'so bad' at the weekend, just coz they went out for a meal or over-ate in some way. But all the self berating never helps you.

I prefer to avoid seeing myself as 'good' or 'bad' depending on what I've eaten, coz it's just food.

No beating myself up and being strict with my eating this week to punish myself.

Just my usual mindful eating, focusing on well balanced meals and listening to my body's hunger cues and appetite. Then it all balances out naturally.
