Nearly two-thirds of people (66%) have experienced at least one mental health issue in the past five years. However, nearly half of men (47%) think there is a stigma attached to having therapy.*

The stigma is rooted in societal expectations and stereotypes regarding masculinity and emotional vulnerability. Many people believe that seeking support or expressing emotions other than anger are signs of weakness. In such cases, men often turn to unhealthy coping strategies such as misusing alcohol or overworking. Such strategies may provide short term relief or distraction but typically exacerbate the underlying issues in the longer term.

Engaging in therapy is actually a sign of strength. High quality therapy provides the safe, non-judgmental, confidential space to explore life's challenges...and it has the power to transform lives.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

Do you know how to support someone who is experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviours? Watch this 40-second video to learn the basic steps from Mental Health First Aid England.

In 2023, 7055 deaths in the UK were officially registered as su***de, equating to an average of 19 deaths by su***de per day.

World Su***de Prevention Day is a global movement focusing on raising awareness of su***de, reducing stigma and encouraging strategies and actions to prevent su***de.

EVERY SU***DE IS A PREVENTABLE TRAGEDY. Workplaces can help by embedding su***de awareness, prevention and support into their mental health and wellbeing strategies. And, as individuals, we can take responsibility for educating ourselves to spot the signs of suicidal behaviours and learning how to respond.

Mental Health First Aid training is a comprehensive course that teaches you how to spot mental ill health and effectively support and signpost those that need it. Learn more:

Whether it's a psychotherapy session or training Mental Health First Aiders, these common principles underlie my work with clients.

Compassion, not shame.
Curiosity, not judgement.
Understanding, not advising or fixing.
Congruence, not collusion.

Deciding to begin talking therapy can feel daunting. I offer a FREE 20-minute telephone or video call to answer any questions you may have.

Our first full session would be an assessment. This is an opportunity to:
* EXPLORE what has brought you to therapy and your goals.
* SHARE key aspects of your history and where you are now.
* UNDERSTAND how I can support you, the types of therapy I can provide, my qualifications and professional standards.
* Begin to BUILD TRUST through openness, honesty, congruence, compassion and non-judgemental acceptance.
* Attend to any CONCERNS or questions you may have.
* Sense if we are a GOOD FIT to work together. If so, we would agree a contract to set mutual boundaries and expectations.

After the assessment is complete, we would agree to:
* An initial block of 6 or 8 sessions.
* Sessions on the same day and time each week.
* Meet online, in a therapy room, walk & talk/ecotherapy or a combination of these.
Therapy rooms and ecotherapy locations: Chorlton (Manchester) and Saddleworth.

When we are coming towards the end of our initial block of sessions, we would then agree to either:
1. Transition to an open-ended contract; or
2. Work towards a good ending.

NATIONAL GRIEF AWARENESS DAY
Today is National Grief Awareness Day. Grief is not confined to death; we can feel it in relation to a wide range of losses. Learning to work through these losses in a healthy way can help us acknowledge, express and heal our wounds. The time it takes and the way we heal from loss has no prescribed course. The void left by the loss of something treasured affects everyone differently.

Today offers an invitation to take stock of your own losses and the people around you who have been affected by loss. For yourself:
- Acknowledge, honour and express your feelings of grief.
- Ask for help if you need it.
- Attend to your self-care.

For those around you:
- Look out for signs of grief.
- Offer to be present for a friend or loved one who is grieving, listening with empathy.
Normalise and validate their feelings.
- Offer ongoing support and signposting to services such as Cruse Bereavement Care or psychotherapy.

"To listen is to lean in softly with the willingness to be changed by what we hear."

What makes someone a 'good listener'? This Mark Nepo quote emphasises the need to actively engage in the process of listening, honouring the speaker with our intention to remain open to the truth of their experience.

Listening is key in both of my job roles. As a psychotherapist, I listen with my whole body in order to connect with my clients' experience. And, as a Mental Health First Aid instructor, one of the skills I teach MHFAiders is active listening, which encourages the people they support to open up about their feelings.

Think of someone you know to be a good listener. How do you feel when you're talking to them?

"The point in this life is not simply to ‘become somebody’, but to become who we were each intended to be when we first entered this world." - Michael Meade

is not just simply about overcoming problems in life. It is also an opportunity to explore and understand the ways in which we may have edited ourselves in order to feel safe, gain acceptance, love, etc... and to reconnect with who we really are - coming home to ourself.
