We're proud to be a part of the national success of the Opening School Facilities (OSF) programme. Since its launch, the programme has seen over 3.2 million attendances through 189,000 activity sessions in 1,580 schools.

Over the past three years, Active Norfolk had the privilege of supporting the OSF programme by:
๐Ÿค Engaging with 51 schools across Norfolk
๐Ÿ‘ฌ Enabling opportunity for 118,515 participants to engage in physical activity
๐Ÿ‘ Allocating ยฃ845,679 in funding to schools
๐Ÿคธ Facilitating 5,904 activity sessions

These initiatives focused on groups identified as less active, including SEND (those with a special educational need or disability), girls, those from ethnically diverse communities (EDC), and those entitled to free school meals (FSM).

Yesterday, our Active Communities Officer, Gabs Manbridge, attended the Family Fun Morning in Thetford.

๐Ÿ‘ A huge thank you to Thetford Town Council, the Early Childhood and Family Service Team via Norfolk County Council, and Keystone Trust for organising such a fantastic event. With more than 30 services in attendance and hundreds of families taking part throughout the day, it was wonderful to see the community come together and get involved.

๐Ÿ“ฃ The event was a great opportunity to showcase the Big Norfolk Holiday Fun activities running locally, with the summer programme currently underway. We also took the opportunity to speak with families and gather insight into what would support them to be more active.

Through our Active Futures programme, developed and delivered in partnership with Norfolk County Council, weโ€™re supporting early years settings to embed physical activity into daily routines and prioritise physical development surrounding children's health and wellbeing outcomes.

๐Ÿค Since launching in March 2024, the pilot has worked with 10 Norfolk early years settings to empower the enhancement of their practice in creating active environments for young children.

๐Ÿ“ฃ One stand out example of this is Little Squirrels Play Forest in Gorleston. This setting embraced the approach by redesigning their spaces to encourage movement, support motor skill development, and improve engagement.

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ Little Squirrels highlights how targeted training, when met with genuine commitment, can lead to meaningful and lasting change in young childrenโ€™s health and development.

We are excited to build on this work to drive sustainable, system-wide change. Learn more about our impact ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://www.activenorfolk.org/our-impact/active-futures/

๐Ÿค Last week, over 30 local community organisations came together for a collaborative workshop as part of the Breckland Health & Wellbeing Partnership strategy. Our Active Communities Officer, Gabs Mansbridge, alongside partners from Breckland Council, Community Action Norfolk and the local Public Health team via Norfolk County Council, supported the ongoing development of the new strategy ensuring it reflects the voices and priorities of our communities.

๐Ÿ’ฌ This workshop followed an earlier session where a draft strategy was shared with the Community Network, who provided valuable feedback. Thursdayโ€™s event built on that by delving deeper into what matters to local communities, where they see opportunities to take action, and what support they need to achieve it.

๐Ÿ’ก Next steps? The Health and Wellbeing Partnership will incorporate these actions into the new strategic approach and continue to engage with the Breckland Community Network to make positive change.

๐Ÿ“ธ Images below are from the second part of the Community Network sessions, which were delivered by Citizens Advice Diss, Thetford and District , who spoke about The Shelf Pop Up Pantry and Barclays UK , who provided insight on scams and fraud. Thank you for your contributions!

In partnership with Great Yarmouth Borough Council, we recently delivered engagement workshops with Years 3 to 6 at several key primary schools in Great Yarmouth as part of our Sport England Place Partnerships work.

Most recently, at Great Yarmouth Primary Academy, we gathered valuable insights into childrenโ€™s views on physical activity, inviting them to share what it means to them, what they enjoy, and what gets in the way.

Pupils explored:

๐Ÿ‘‰ What they believe counts as physical activity
๐Ÿ‘‰ Activities they enjoy with family, friends, or on their own
๐Ÿ‘‰ What they find most exciting and fun
๐Ÿ‘‰ Common barriers that prevent them from being active

They also imagined a world where they were in charge and had unlimited possibilities to help their community move more. Their ideas were not only creative and insightful, but showed a real passion for helping others be active ๐Ÿƒ

These reflections offer real value, as they give a voice to the young people in their community, highlighting both what inspires them and whatโ€™s currently missing to help them be more physically active.

๐Ÿ‘ We're proud to have supported a recent tag rugby tournament that marked the end of a successful year-long partnership between local primary schools and West Norfolk Rugby Club. Funded by the King's Lynn & West Norfolk Health & Wellbeing Partnership, the initiative was supported by our West Norfolk Active Communities Officer, Becky Gillick.

๐Ÿ‰ The programme aimed to support schools in delivering rugby and to give all children the opportunity to access and take part in the sport. Over the course of the year, 12 primary schools across West Norfolk received up to 20 hours of rugby coaching for their Year 5 and 6 pupils.

๐Ÿ† The end-of-year tournament led by Coach James Burroughs brought pupils together to celebrate their progress, build confidence, and showcase the skills they had developed through the sessions. Special guests Georgie Lingham (GB 7s) and Jess Milnes (Loughborough Lightning Academy) were on hand to inspire the children, chat with them, and even take part in a few races, creating a truly inspiring experience for the children.

๐ŸŽ‰ Weโ€™re excited to see the clubโ€™s ambition to continue the programme from September, expanding to even more schools and giving more children the chance to get active through rugby.

Last week, the government released 'Fit for the Future'; the 10 year healthcare plan for England. This plan focussed on three main changes within the NHS, and pledged to prioritise a move from analogue to digital, from treatment to prevention and from hospitals to communities.

This shift reflects the important work being undertaken through Active NoW; a programme which was implemented in 2023 by Active Norfolk and South Norfolk and Broadland Council , overseen by the Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care System . The programme aims to provide a simplified method for healthcare professionals to refer patients they feel would benefit from increased physical activity.

As shown in our latest impact report, there were over 4600 referrals made across the county between 2024-2025, which consisted of over 200 organisations referring into the programme. As a result of the collaborative effort from partners and providers across the county, Active NoW has now reached over 10,000 referrals in its lifetime.

โ€œActive NoW has built momentum since its introduction just over 2 years ago, and to reach 10,000 referrals is a real milestone." Said Ryan Hughes, Head of Programmes & Partnerships at Active Norfolk.

It is testament to the hard work and collaboration for all that have been involved, and a great example of what an Integrated Care System can offer." Ryan added. "We hope to be around for years to come and keep supporting those long-term conditions to be as active as possible.โ€

Our Director, Eve Dewsnap, appeared live on BBC Radio Norfolk this morning alongside Joe Murfitt, Active Community Manager at Alive (Alive Active Community), to discuss the increasing cost of sports for children, young people, and their families.

The conversation highlighted the importance of providing opportunities for all children and young people, regardless of income, background or ability, as well as the value of investing in local communities and the vital role they play.

Programmes like Big Norfolk Holiday Fun exist to meet this very need. With the support of fantastic local providers, the programme gives children aged 5-16 receiving benefits-related free school meals the opportunity to enjoy free activities during the school holidays.
