I’m proud to give my time philanthropically, but I’ve noticed a trend of ‘pseudo-charity’ businesses. On paper they may be non-profit, but too often big salaries are hidden behind community fears. My view is simple: charge fairly, pay taxes, and be transparent about being a business, because in the long run, that’s what truly serves communities best.

What an absolute blast of an evening teaching BLS and the effective use of an AED in Chatham last night.

We were invited by the community group who wanted more than just a box on the wall, they wanted confidence. Confidence that if someone collapses, their neighbours know what to do, how to act fast, and how to use the AED that now protects their space.

From chest compressions to rescue breaths, and from pad placement to shock delivery, everyone threw themselves into the training. The laughter, questions, and teamwork showed exactly why this community will be ready if the unthinkable happens.

This isn’t just about equipment, it’s about people. Skills learned today could save a life tomorrow.

In a busy office canteen, a man collapsed mid-lunch. His colleague acted fast, starting CPR and placing the AED pads onto his bare chest. Everyone around stopped eating, their eyes fixed on what was happening.

When the AED began analysing the heart rhythm, the rescuer knew the rule: hands off. No one touched the casualty. Pads were firmly in place, the team waited for the device to give its clear instructions.

That pause is vital. It lets the AED do its job properly, and those calm few seconds can make all the difference.

We received an alert from our AED tracking system, the community defibrillator at a rural Parish had been used.

Our team immediately retrieved the device, bringing it back to our workshop for checking, cleaning, and replenishment. The used pads were safely removed, and the unit is now undergoing a full service to make sure it’s 100% ready for the next emergency.

But community safety can’t wait. That’s why we installed a clinical loan device in its place straight away, so the local community has uninterrupted access to a life-saving AED.

We recently checked an AED that was still showing green — but it was over 10 years old.

Here’s the issue: inside every AED is a capacitor, the part that stores the energy for a shock. Over time, that component wears down. Even if the “OK” light is on, it may not deliver the full energy needed in a real emergency.

That’s why manufacturers recommend replacing AEDs at the 10-year mark. Beyond that, no one can guarantee it will work when it matters most.

When a cardiac emergency strikes, every second matters. The team at the village Inn decided they wanted their community to be fully prepared — so they raised the funds to make it happen.

This week, a brand-new Heart Safe & Rescue Ready package was installed at the Inn, complete with a Mindray AED, AED Aftercare Responder kit, and secure heated cabinet.

To make sure the whole community feels confident, staff and volunteers also took part in hands-on training, practising CPR and learning how to use the lifesaving equipment.

It’s a proud moment for the Inn and a big step forward in protecting everyone who visits or lives nearby.
