When you do a course at work relevant to your job, on your return you put these new skills into practice, while they are fresh in your mind. First Aid training is not something (hopefully) you are going to use straight away or everyday. Most of us hope you will never need those skills

Keep First Aid simple. First aid training should be as simple as possible because most people never use it between courses (normally once every 3 years)

One of the most important things to do when you are faced with any situation, especially in an emergency is to stay calm and Breathe!

DRABC (or DRsABC or DRABCD or DRABCDE). If you have ever done a First Aid course you will know what those letters stand for, Danger Response Airway Breathing Circulation (Call for help).

This is a very sad story, Lidl not having anyone suitably trained in First Aid to be able to help out. If you run a shop of any size you have a duty of care to your customers and employees working for you. While this doesn't mean you require a full first aid team if you are small, you at least need someone able to take charge with the basic knowledge of what to do in an emergency. This leaflet from HSE spells out your requirements for first aiders at work,http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg214.pdf

Several people have said "But you might get sued if you are a qualified first aider"

NO. The "Social responsibility and heroism Act 2015" explicitly states you will not be sued or prosecuted if you are trying to help someone in need, regardless of your qualification. So please ask your employer to get as many staff trained as possible.

I love delivering First Aid training, the idea that someone I have trained may save a life one day. I was back at a company to do their second Emergency First Aid at Work course, can't have all the employees in the classroom at the same time. The office manager (and company mum as she calls herself) let me know that the day after I had taught her the week before they had someone sprain their ankle a she was able to put her training into practice!

The second course went as well as the first, even the Boss and owner of the business was involved this time. Here he is learning CPR

UK survival rates for cardiac arrest are some of the lowest, around 8.6%, compared with 25% in Norway.

This is due to too few people knowing what to do or too scared to do anything.

Finally, schools will start to teach CPR to all children, which is a start. For those of you who it's too late to learn in school either find a Basic Life support course or get your employer to have everyone trained. One more statistic, 80% of CPR is performed in the home, you are more likely to have to perform CPR on someone you love than a stranger. Make sure you know what you are doing.

Plans to teach basic first aid in schools have been welcomed by the British Heart Foundation.
