Energetic Connections I am a fully qualified and insured holistic therapist working in the Highlands, offering healing and I absolutely love my job.

I currently hold qualifications in Equine Massage Therapy, Holistic Equine Therapy and Canine Myotherapy. I am always working on some sort of CPD, as I truly love my subject and am keen to learn as much as I can about every facet of it. I find these therapies extremely complimentary to one another, and use all 3 every time I work. They all deal with different issues, yet balance and integrate together well, allowing me to work as effectively and efficiently as possible. They all work together to, among other things: improve flexibility and suppleness; re-balance the emotional and physical bodies; relieve any pain; release any emotional, physiological, and/or psychological stress; and help the animal's body begin to heal itself. The techniques I use are all gentle, non-invasive, and sensitive, and work with your horse's body to help begin (and continue) healing. Using my training and intuition I not only treat the immediate symptoms presented, but the underlying problems, allowing the systems to return to their natural state of equilibrium. I learn something new from every animal I treat whether they are new to me or one I've seen before. I find this very rewarding, as it is always incredible to see the impact you can have on an animal's life and well-being. It's amazing to see them responding to and working with me, to release issues that may have been present for a while, and to begin healing. I believe all horses and dogs can benefit from these therapies, whether they are retired or competing in intense competition, and I feel privileged to be able to help. If you’re interested in learning more, please feel free to browse this page, visit my website, or get in touch.

Hi guys,

It's been a very strange year! I know I've not posted much on this page, but I am still out and about, keeping busy and catching up with regular and new clients - hopefully next year will be less chaotic and will allow for more regular updates!

For now I want to say thank you to everyone for sticking with our sessions during this stressful time. It really means a lot to me and the difference it makes to our 4 legged friends cannot be put into words. I appreciate each and every one of you and it is always a privilege to be able to help in any way I can.

I hope you are all keeping well and safe and want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Today was my official first day back at work after the lockdown, and it was absolutely fantastic! I am so lucky to have a job I adore, and wonderful clients who make each and every appointment a pleasure. I’ve been in touch with everyone who was on my list – if I’ve missed anyone I’m really sorry, please drop me a message and we’ll get something sorted.

Of course due to the virus I have put precautions in place to ensure everyone stays safe, but so far these haven’t impacted the sessions much. I really appreciate each and every one of you and I look forward to catching up soon.

Covid-19 update

After last night’s updates, there's been more information and advice from various governing bodies, vets etc regarding returning to work. Unfortunately, this is not including Scotland at the moment – we are still very much in lockdown.

So for now I’m waiting to hear back from various bodies etc, and once there is more information I’ll be able to update you all further. Of course, things will have to be a bit different once I am able to get out again. I’m still working on exactly what form this is going to take and how to incorporate the new guidelines, but I will have everything in place before re-starting, and of course will be in touch with everyone to let you know.

I’m really missing seeing all of you and am looking forward to being able to start safely working again. I’m loving the updates from each of you and if you have any issues etc please feel free to get in touch. I hope you’re all keeping safe and doing well, and hopefully I’ll be seeing you soon!

Stay safe ❤️

I've been keeping myself busy during this lockdown - catching up on admin, CPD etc, and I've been working hard on developing my website. This has taken me a wee while as it is quite involved, but I'm happy with what I've got so far, and would love to share it with all of you! It's still not perfect, and is definitely a work in progress, but here you go.

I'm hoping to be out and about soon, as I'm missing working and keeping up to date with all of you. I hope everyone's getting on well and keeping safe!

I’m really proud to be able to share some exciting news with all of you - I am now qualified in Canine Myotherapy! This is something I’ve been working towards for a while and I’m really pleased to be able to offer my services to dogs as well as horses now. It’s been a very exciting journey so far and I can’t wait to start this new chapter of it!

It’s been pretty hectic over this last wee while, with regular and new clients to see, and lots of exciting new things happening which I can’t wait to share with you. I’ve been blown away recently with the massive changes and improvements I’m seeing in several cases, it’s hugely rewarding and reminds me of why I love this job so much. I’ve got quite a bit of paperwork to be catching up with, but I wanted to share my new logo with you. It’s taken a little time to create but I’m very happy with it 😊

I find myself being reminded a lot at the moment of the importance of rest, something which is often greatly overlooked. It can be so easy to push that little bit harder, to do just that little bit more, in the hope of gaining something extra.

This pattern is very easy to fall into with ourselves, and with our horses. We occasionally forget that, just as our muscles are sore after doing some particularly active exercise, it works exactly the same for them. With ourselves, we’re usually fairly good at knowing when we need a break, and giving our bodies a little rest to recover (though sometimes we forget the importance of this). It’s important to remember that horses need this too.

This is why it’s essential to give our horses rest when they need it, because although it may cost some time now, so much more is gained later. It really does make a huge difference and the effects are wonderful to see!

I've been reminded over the last wee while of the importance of adaptability. When I first meet a horse, I use all the information I collect to form an idea of the overall picture - what issues may be present, why, and where I need to focus in order to help most effectively. Over time these first issues begin to resolve and I can start to work towards discovering the deeper problems, getting steadily closer and closer to the main issue.

This is when adaptability comes into play, as I begin to think and re-evaluate what's going on due to the new information being revealed every time I see them. Over time I very rarely stick to the original theory I had, as most times I need to be flexible enough to see that things are constantly changing, and just because a certain area of the body is affected, that doesn't mean that this is where the real issue is - in fact a lot of the time this is just a consequence, and I need to peel back more layers.

By changing my theories when needed I can work with the horse and owner to find - and heal - the main issues, thus allowing the horse's body to begin rebalancing as quickly and effectively as possible.

I'm often asked what exactly it is I do. As holistic therapy can sound quite vague and be confusing, I’d like to describe it in a little more detail.

Holistic therapy is an integrated approach to the horse's well-being, that takes into account every aspect of their lives - diet, injuries, previous history, lifestyle, gait, conformation etc are just a handful of examples of the information I gather at a first appointment. All of these are carefully examined to allow me to get a full appreciation of all the forces that are working on the horse, both past and present.

With this information I can begin to build up a picture of what I should be looking for, and what I might expect to find. I take everything into account, so I can find the most effective and efficient solutions. This is of course different for every horse, and every one progresses at a different rate. Add to this that as we progress and issues are resolved, new ones can become apparent that were masked by the others, and so a new approach is necessary. This is what makes holistic therapy so challenging, yet so effective in dealing with all manner of problems.

Holistic therapy is beneficial to every single horse, whether working or retired, and makes such a massive difference to their lives as well as to that of their owners. While it is a long term commitment, the results are hugely rewarding.

I'd like to talk a little about fascia. Fascia is everywhere, it surrounds every organ, bone, muscle, vein etc in the body. The best way to think of it is as a 3-D web - connecting and separating literally every part of the body.

There are several layers of fascia, all with similar yet different jobs, and in it's unstressed and healthy state fascia is soft, gel-like and moves smoothly. It is extremely versatile, and thus is able to cope with all of the demands made on it during life. However, the fascial system can become unbalanced, mostly due to stress, trauma, or injury.

When one area of the fascial system becomes unbalanced the fascia begins to stiffen and tense itself to protect this area and limit any damage. This can in turn impact muscle function and cause aches, pain, stiffness, lameness etc. Fascia can also become restricted due to emotional trauma, and can become stuck, which again limits physical movement. It can hold on to this tension and trauma for many years, slowly creating more and more issues.

This is why I use myofascial release so often, because in most cases the muscles, tendons etc are not what is actually causing the main problem, it's restricted fascia! Once this is released the improvements can be amazing. Fascia is so important, and there is so much that is still being discovered - I'm fascinated by it!

I've been thinking a lot about balance recently. It's a term that I feel is frequently misused, and a lot of the time is not given the attention it deserves.

In my mind balance means being in a state of equilibrium, everything working as it should and as efficiently as possible. In horses (and in us too) this applies to the physical body and mental state, but also to the emotional and energetic systems.
When just one of these areas is blocked, the whole is no longer balanced, and this can slowly spread throughout our bodies, creating all manner of further issues.

This is where holistic therapy really shines, as it works with every area to bring the whole system back into balance. It's not always easy, and can take time, but it is worth the effort as the rewards are incredible to witness.

I've been seeing a lot of horses with restrictions in the thoracic sling recently. It's an important area that I always take the time to check as it can have so many far reaching consequences, and cause many compensatory issues.

As horses don't have a clavicle there is no bony connection between the front limbs and the trunk, instead they are attached and supported via a network of muscles, tendons and ligaments collectively called the thoracic sling. There are many muscles which make up, and are important for the correct functioning of, the thoracic sling: the trapezius, pectorals, and serratus ventralis to name a few. There are many more muscles which attach to, and work with, the thoracic sling - the latissimus dorsi, deltoids, and extensors and flexors of the front limbs for instance. All of these muscles work together to hold the forelimbs onto the trunk, and to move the front legs, ribcage, withers and back.

When there is tension and stress in the thoracic sling, the shoulders are most often affected and become restricted, the stride in front is shortened, sometimes girthing problems occur, and energy can become blocked in the energetic systems, along with many other compensatory issues throughout the entire body. If not released changes in behaviour can also develop.

Depending on how long the issue has been present for will affect how long it takes to release fully, sometimes it's very quick - over one session, sometimes it's much longer and takes many more. However it is definitely worth it as you see the changes in the horse's emotional state and their movement!

I'd like to talk a little about the long term benefits of holistic therapy. When I first start working with a horse I often find a few problems that are present immediately - sometimes many! As we continue to work together, we begin to explore through several different layers of issue, and the horse begins to open and slowly show me the things that he or she would like focused work on - sometimes they'll have held onto these for many years so this can take a while.

Over time we begin to see more and more improvement, with sessions becoming less frequent as we release fully the long standing issues. At this point I can start to work more preventatively, releasing any new problems before they develop. This is where it can be really tempting to stop the regular sessions, as the main areas of pain are released and often the horse is moving and feeling better than they have in a long time.

However, I feel it's at this point that regular follow up sessions become most important! By continuing to work every few months preventatively, we can ensure the horse stays healthy and balanced in the long term, and stop any new problems from developing while keeping any old ones from reoccurring.

This is the one of the reasons I truly believe holistic therapy is essential for every horse.

As it's coming up to Christmas I just want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I've enjoyed every session, and am really pleased with the amazing improvements I've seen in the horses and ponies over this year. :) I just wanted to share these photos from Treacle's first session. He has a lot going on, and is quite wary, but has already begun the healing process and I can't wait to see how we progress!

I've been out and about recently catching up with some of my regulars and I'm really enjoying seeing the wonderful improvements in each different case. I wanted to share this photo of Angelo from the other day with you. Every time I see him he teaches me something new and it's so rewarding to watch him progress and improve :)
