How do you want to feel?
January this year, this was the question I was asking myself, the question I’m asking you now: how do you want to feel? That was a tough question for me at the time, maybe it is for you too.
Being a mother is work. It’s hard work of a kind that no one really tells you about, that nothing really prepares yourself for. It’s the kind of work that too often is erased (if we ever fully acknowledged the importance of it, that awareness would turn the world upside down). And it is a wealth of specialist knowledge, a training ground for the *highest* personal development and spiritual practice - because you know that that is? That is love - love in action, love in expansion, love in service.
And yet...
Motherhood can hurt. I guess that’s the transformation in it, but too many of us get stuck there, mired in the struggle.
How do you want to feel?
That’s what I was asking myself. I didn’t know, so I started small -- I started with what I actually was feeling. Trust me, those feelings weren’t the desired ones. But I was feeling, and noticing -- overwhelmed, exhausted. With each feeling I didn’t want to feel, came an awareness of something I did want to feel: organised, rested. I kept it simple at the start. When I had to make a choice, I came back to how I wanted to feel. Rested. Organised.
That was enough to start.
