-----ABOUT THE PLACE:
*In 1941 a US
army camp was
built in Marchington ( just a stone throw away from Draycott in the Clay). It became a prisoner-of-war camp in 1944 when the
soldiers left for the D-
Day invasion of Europe.
The Air Ministry took over part of the Fauld excavation to store ammunition. By wartime up to 40,000 tons were in store consisting mainly of 250- to 4000-pound bombs.
At 11.11 am on 27th November 1944, this ammunition store exploded, causing the third largest explosion of the war. This removed the roof of of the mine for a diameter of 250 m and killed 80 people above and below ground. A farmstead, plaster works and a reservoir of six million gallons disappeared.
In 1955, RAF Marchington was reopened as a US Base, supporting cold War operations in the UK.
The current property was built at this time and occupied by the colonel.
In the 1970s, the property was occupied by UK military personnel when RAF Marchington was again reopened to provide vehicles to support the troubles in Northern Ireland.
There are rumours of underground tunnels used throughout recent military history.
*From around 1080 Stubby lane was a route toTutbury Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was kept prisoner for a period of time. Many prisoners would have travelled along Stubby lane to meet with their fate.
We believe a former local lock-up existed on the site, providing short term incarceration for petty crime and temporary holding before transporting more serious criminals to trial or larger prisons, including Tutbury castle.
*Until recent times, the area was made up of farmsteads created when medieval field patterns were reordered.
*There is also evidence of mesolithic life has been found in the area.
‐- REPORTED SIGHTINGS --
*Two boys who met a tragic end on farm land.
*WW2 Italian prisoner-of-war who was put to work in the Fauld ammunition store.
*"Water man", an unknown spirit who appears during times of localised flooding.
*As a result of ley-lines and large water sources nearby, we find many spirits tend to drop in frequency.
It truly seems to be a hot-spot for activity.
