Extreme people pleasing can feel like a kid act, when In reality it often comes from a place of survival. Needing to keep the environment and people around us happy equates to safety. Fawning is a survival response that requires behaviors that override our own needs for the sake of meeting others needs. This is to ensure we are not abandoned, rejected or harmed.
Fawning can often mask our deep rooted fears and deflect away from our genuine kindness. Being able to notice our fawn response, ask ourselves with kindness and compassion our motives behind our behaviors can point arrows towards potential unhealed parts of ourselves that do not feel safe to set boundaries with others or meet our own needs alongside the meeting of others.
Therapy can support this process, helping us step out of survival and into our authenticity.
