How Balance Training Sharpens the Brain 🧠✨

Balance work isn’t just about staying steady in yoga — it’s one of the simplest ways to support long‑term brain health. It also plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of falls as we age. A major fall in our 60s or early 70s can have serious consequences, and recovery rates after a fall between ages 60–65 are sadly very low.

The good news? We can train balance. And every wobble, every moment of focus, every one‑legged posture is strengthening both your body and your brain.

I’ve written a new blog exploring the science behind balance training — including studies showing improvements in memory and spatial cognition — plus a list of yoga balance postures you can try, from simple heel lifts in Tadasana to Warrior III, Dancer’s Pose, arm balances and even Handstand.

If you’re curious about how balance work supports your brain as much as your body, you can read the full post here:

🌟 Celebrating Everyone Who Came to Play Upside Down

Thank you to everyone who came to explore the journey toward Handstand with me this morning. The energy, curiosity, and willingness to play made the room feel electric.

Someone shared with me afterwards how well‑sequenced and clearly taught the session felt — and that meant the world. Teaching handstands has never been about “nailing” the pose. It’s about guiding people through the process of discovering strength, awareness, courage, and a deeper understanding of how their bodies move.

Just like I shared in the workshop, the handstand is often seen as an advanced posture, but the real magic lies in everything you learn on the way there. Today we explored:

✨ What the handstand shape actually requires
💪 The key areas to train, strengthen, and mobilise
🧭 How to use other postures, drills, and exercises to progress safely
😄 A light‑hearted, educational, and fun approach to going upside down

It’s never about achieving the “perfect” handstand. It’s about curiosity, play, and discovering what you’re capable of when you take things step by step.

And for anyone who couldn’t make it this time — good news. This workshop will be back very soon. If you missed out, you’ll have another chance to join the fun and learn the foundations of going upside down.

Thank you again for showing up with open minds, brave hearts, and a willingness to turn your world upside down — literally.

There is more interesting stuff about the Handstand Pose in yoga in my blog post -

In yoga, the handstand — Adho Mukha Vrksasana — is often seen as a pinnacle posture. It looks impressive, it demands strength, and it carries a certain mystique. But the deeper truth is this: the handstand is far more valuable as a journey than as a destination.Whether or not you ever balance fu...

Ever notice how one negative thought can spiral into ten more before you’ve even had your morning coffee…?

In a world where we’re constantly comparing our lives to everyone else’s highlight reel, it’s easy to slip into the feeling that we’re not doing enough, achieving enough, or being enough. Social media has turned comparison into a daily reflex, and it quietly eats away at our peace.

There’s a beautiful practice from the Yoga Sūtras that feels surprisingly modern: Pratipakṣa Bhāvanā — the art of consciously cultivating the opposite thought.

When your mind says, “I’m behind,” you gently introduce, “I’m on my own timeline.”
When you feel envy, you shift toward appreciation.
When you feel inadequate, you practice self-kindness instead of self-criticism.

It’s not about pretending everything is perfect. It’s about interrupting the mental spiral and choosing a healthier direction.
One thought at a time, we can retrain the mind to move toward clarity instead of comparison, compassion instead of criticism, and presence instead of pressure.

If you’ve been feeling the weight of “not enough,” this practice is a quiet, powerful way to reclaim your inner space.

If you want to read more, here is my latest blog post:

Have you ever caught yourself spiralling into negative thoughts before the day has even begun? One moment you’re fine, and the next you’re comparing your life to someone else’s holiday photos, career announcement, or perfectly curated morning routine. It’s almost automatic now — this refle...

Pranayama is the fourth limb of yoga. It is the bridge between the body and the mind—a conscious meeting point where movement, energy, and awareness flow into harmony. Through intentional breathwork, we tap into the subtle currents that influence how we feel, think, and respond to life. When we learn to shape the breath, we learn to shape our inner world, and therefore our outer world, transforming the way we show up in every moment with greater clarity, steadiness, and presence. If this resonates with you, my book Yoga Words of Wisdom, available on Amazon, offers deeper reflections to support your journey into this powerful fourth limb of yoga.

**NEW WORKSHOP**

✨A Practical Guide to Modern Meditation: Science, Styles, & the Power of Presence ✨

Modern life pulls our attention in a thousand directions, leaving many of us feeling scattered, stressed, or disconnected. This workshop offers a grounded, accessible introduction to meditation that blends ancient wisdom with contemporary neuroscience — helping you understand why meditation works and how to build a practice that genuinely supports your wellbeing.

During the workshop, after some gentle movement and breathwork, you’ll explore three core styles of meditation, each offering a different pathway into presence:

Breath Awareness: Using the natural rhythm of your breathing as an anchor for calm, clarity, and emotional balance.

Mantra Meditation: Repeating a word or phrase to steady the mind, reduce mental noise, and cultivate inner stillness

Visualisation Practice: Using imagery to focus attention, support relaxation, and activate the brain’s powerful capacity for mental rehearsal

You’ll also learn how meditation reshapes the brain, reduces stress, and strengthens the mind–body connection — all explained in simple, practical language.

This workshop is designed for complete beginners as well as those looking to deepen their understanding of meditation. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of techniques you can use anytime, anywhere, along with a clearer sense of how to bring more presence, ease, and resilience into your daily life.

The workshop is on Friday March 20th from 5.30pm to 7pm, at The John Betjeman Centre in Wadebridge.

£15 per person. Booking is essential. Please message me or email lucyann.prideaux@yahoo.com.

Meditation is no longer just a spiritual practice — modern science now shows how it supports mental clarity, emotional balance, and overall wellbeing. Regular meditation helps calm the stress response, improves focus, and strengthens our ability to stay present, even in challenging moments.

Whether you use breath awareness, a mantra, or visualisation, each technique trains the mind to become steadier, clearer, and more grounded. It’s where ancient wisdom and modern research meet — and the benefits reach far beyond the meditation cushion.

If you’re curious about how meditation works or want to build a simple, effective practice, check my latest blog post -

Meditation has been part of human culture for thousands of years, but modern science is now confirming what ancient traditions have long understood: meditation can reshape the mind, calm the body, and transform how we experience life. With the rise of brain‑imaging technology and decades of resear...

Why I Close Class with “Namaste”...

You will often hear yoga teachers close a class with the word "Namaste." Some teachers choose other ways to close a class, such as a mantra or a simple thank you.

I choose to close most of my classes with the word Namaste as a gesture of respect, unity, and remembrance of our shared experience. In its simplest translation, namaste means “I bow to you,” but within the context of yoga, it carries a deeper meaning — the divine light within me honours the divine light within you. For me, it symbolises that moment at the end of practice when teacher and student meet in equality, beyond roles, status, or personality. It acknowledges that we are each a spark of the same universal energy, connected through breath and awareness.

I also recognise that Namaste is a Sanskrit word rooted in Indian culture and used in many everyday contexts. To speak it at the end of yoga practice is not an appropriation of that culture, but a conscious act of reverence — when done with understanding, respect, and heartfelt intention. By pausing to say Namaste, we honour the ancient lineage of yoga, the teachers who came before us, and the light that exists in all beings.

A Closing Reflection

"As our practice comes to an end, may we rest in gratitude — for our breath, our bodies, and this shared community. When I say Namaste, I simply honour the goodness and light within you, just as I honour it within myself. May we walk back into the world a little softer, a little clearer, and more connected.
Namaste."

A bit about me...

Hello and thank you so much for visiting my page, and showing interest in “Yoga & Hiking with Lucy-Ann”. My name is Lucy-Ann Prideaux, and I live in beautiful Cornwall... in the market town of Wadebridge. Wadebridge sits on the banks of the Camel Estuary, about 8 miles in land from Padstow, and it’s here that I’ve made my home. Surrounded by some of the most beautiful and breath-taking countryside and coastline, it is, without doubt, a hiker’s and nature lover’s paradise.

SO... why YOGA and HIKING? These are two great passions of mine, and I decided I wanted to share, and enjoy them both with others! You can check out all my Services, and what I offer, on this page.
