New vaccination data for adult social care shows a general decrease in flu vaccination uptake compared with the same point last winter. This comes at a time when respiratory illnesses are more common, and services are managing the usual winter pressures.
The latest DHSC figures indicate the following year-on-year changes:
๐นIn older adult care homes, staff uptake has reduced from 10.7 per cent to 8.2 per cent, and resident uptake from 63.4 per cent to 56.7 per cent.
๐นYounger adult homes have seen staff vaccination fall from 9.6 per cent to 6.4 per cent, with resident uptake decreasing from 47.3 per cent to 40.1 per cent.
๐นIn domiciliary care, staff uptake has declined from 13.3 per cent to 11.3 per cent.
These figures serve as a timely reminder of the role that strong infection prevention and control arrangements play during the winter period. Lower vaccination coverage can increase susceptibility to flu and other respiratory illnesses, which in turn may place additional pressure on teams already working hard to maintain safe, consistent care.
Our role is to continue to support providers with practical guidance and external oversight, helping services strengthen their infection control systems and stay well-prepared throughout the winter season.
