                                            There’s an awful lot of information on the importance of having a ‘cortisol detox’. 
Cortisol is in fact an extremely essential hormone, it is released during fight or flight to protect you. It’s what makes us stay on red alert, the heart rate increases, your stomach churns, you go sweaty and you’re ready for action. This is great short term and indeed life saving when facing big life events, danger or emergencies. It also increases metabolism, controls blood pressure and  regulates immune function with essential anti-inflammatory mechanisms plus it helps control the vital sleep-wake cycle.
However cortisol is not great long term. When we are stressed and anxious we produce an overload of it which long term has negative consequences to not only our mental health but also huge physical implications on our bodies.
High levels of cortisol can cause fatigue, irritability, headaches, weight gain, increased blood pressure, and mood swings. Too little cortisol can cause fatigue, dizziness, weight loss, and low blood pressure.
So instead of a cortisol detox - let’s focus on cortisol regulation.
