Many, if not most people, and healthcare professionals, believe that weight gain is simply a due to consuming more calories than we burn.

On average we are told, we burn 2,000 calories if we are female, and 2,500 if we are male.

If we are getting fat, it’s simply that we are eating too much food, so we should eat less.

Let’s check the maths then.

As a male, I should be ‘burning’ 2,500 calories. As I live in the UK, the average calorie consumption is 3,400 per day, so a surplus of 900 per day.

Times this by 7, and you have 6,300 extra calories per week. It takes, we are told, 3,500 extra calories to create 1 lb of fat ( at least we are told we must have a deficit of 500 per day to lose 1lb per week).

So an average man in the uk , should be gaining 1.8 lbs per week, or 91.8 lbs per year, (6.55 stones) or an extra 186 stones between age 20 and 50.

So no, I don’t believe it’s as simple as calories in vs calories out. If it were, the additional daily calories required to produce obesity by middle age would vary from 6-12, equivalent to 1-2 almonds.

Sorry for not posting so much recently. Lots of work going on behind the scenes!

1. Helping son Tommy achieve his dream of getting into the Royal Marines - now on recruits course!
2. Supporting eldest son Alex in his dream of becoming a pro-cyclist - big step up for Alex in joining Elite team Spirit TBW Stuart Hall.
3. Overcoming my own health issues- having battled gout since the age of 23, I found that although it's been controlled by lifestyle now for 18 years, elevated uric acid was causing chronic inflammation and low grade pain, along with appalling recovery from exercise.

Now fully under control, so re-building my strength and fitness, and determined to find new lifetime high's in both!

Best of luck to Alex in the British Cycling Elite Mens National Championships on Sunday!

So we all know too much sugar is bad for us right?

So the big question is, what about 'natural' sources of sugar? They must be OK right?

Reality is, sugars are broken down in the sugar, and the source is irrelevant. Glucose is glucose, fructose is fructose, they all cause the same response in our blood and metabolism.

Here's a link to some research which breaks it down, and is based on research done on bloods by Dr David Unwin. He shows the response to various common foods in the three categories of naturally occurring sugars, added sugars, and starchy carbs, and shows the effect on blood glucose compared to teaspoons full of pure sugar.

For me, this slide is what everybody needs to understand:

Given that mental health treatment outcomes have not improved dramatically over time despite a wealth of research, novel psychotherapies and pharmaceutical compounds, it is important that new theories around mental disorders continue to be identif...
