Meningitis Vaccinations at Your GP Practice

Protecting yourself and your children against meningitis is a priority. We offer two types of vaccinations to help prevent serious illnesses like meningitis (brain infection) , septicaemia (blood poisoning) , and sepsis.

MenB Vaccine (Babies and Toddlers)

The MenB vaccine protects against group B bacteria, which are a
common cause of life-threatening infections.
● Who it’s for: Infants and children up to 2 years old.
● Typical Schedule: Usually given at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and
1 year old.
● Catching Up: If your child has missed a dose, they can still
receive the vaccine until their 2nd birthday.
● Safety: Most children can have this vaccine. It should only be
avoided if the child has had a severe allergic reaction
(anaphylaxis) to a previous dose or a specific ingredient in the
vaccine.

MenACWY Vaccine (Teenagers and Young Adults)
This vaccine protects against four different strains of meningococcal
bacteria (A, C, W, and Y).
● Who it’s for: Teenagers and young adults aged 15 to 25.
● How to get it: While often offered in schools, you can receive
this at the GP surgery if you missed it.

Important Information
● NHS Eligibility: We can only provide these vaccines to the
age groups listed above unless national guidelines change.
● Appointments: The surgery will usually contact you via letter,
text, or email to invite your child for their vaccinations.
● Stay Updated: For the most current information, please check
the latest UK Health Security Agency guidance.
