So chuffed to be heading back to Warrington Wellbeing Festival this year 💛

I was there last year in the Teens Arena, and I’m back again this year talking about something I hear all the time from not just teens literally everyone!!
Overthinking. Replaying conversations. Worrying about school, work, friendships, what people think, what might go wrong…

then trying to sleep while your brain decides now is the perfect time to run through absolutely everything. Cheers for that 🙃!!

My session is:
Why Your Brain Won’t Shut Up!

It’s for teens who feel like their head is constantly busy, and for and parents who want to understand a bit more about what’s going on behind the “I’m fine” and the bedroom door.
Can’t wait to be part of it again ✨

There’s a difference between reflecting on something and getting stuck in it.

Reflection sounds like:
• “What can I learn from this?”
• “What would I do differently next time?”

It’s calm.
Constructive.
And eventually, it ends.

Rumination is different.

It sounds like:
• “Why did I do that?”
• “What if I’ve messed everything up?”
• replaying the same moment over and over again

Not to learn but because anxiety keeps pulling you back into it.

Reflection helps you move forward.

Rumination keeps you emotionally stuck in the same place.

You do not need to analyse everything endlessly to grow from it.

Sometimes growth looks like:
• understanding the lesson
• letting it go
• and moving on without carrying it all day

If you’ve thought about something over and over again…

and still don’t feel any clearer you’re probably not solving it.

You’re looping it.

Same thoughts.
Same questions.
Same “what ifs.”

Just in slightly different forms.

It can feel like progress, but it usually leads to:
• more doubt
• more frustration
• more mental exhaustion

Clarity doesn’t come from repeating the same thought.

It comes from:
• stepping away
• interrupting the loop
• choosing to move forward

You don’t need to think about it one more time.

You need to step out of it.

Waiting to feel completely sure is what keeps you stuck.

“Just one more check…”
“Just a bit more thinking…”
“Then I’ll decide…”

But certainty doesn’t usually come from thinking more.
It comes from choosing and moving forward.

Most decisions in life
don’t come with full clarity.

They come with:
• enough information
• a reasonable option
• and a moment to act

And the longer you wait for certainty, the louder the doubt becomes.

At some point, it helps to:
• make the decision
• trust it
• let it be enough

You don’t need 100% certainty.
You just need to stop waiting for it.

Doubt doesn’t start loud.

It’s usually a quiet thought:
“Are you sure?”
“What if that’s not right?”

But the more attention you give it, the louder it becomes.

You check again.
Then again.
Then you start questioning everything.

Not because you don’t know, but because you’ve trained your mind to keep looking for certainty.

At some point, the cycle has to be interrupted.

Not with more thinking… but with a decision.

• Decide
• Stick with it
• Let it be enough

You don’t need to eliminate doubt completely.
You just need to stop giving it so much attention.

Good luck to everyone starting their GCSEs this week 🤍

This can be a big and emotional time for young people and for parents supporting them.

A gentle reminder:
It’s not about being perfect.
It’s about doing your best with what you have on the day.

Encouragement, calm, and support go a long way this week.

You’ve got this one step at a time.

It feels productive.

Like you’re figuring things out.
Like you’re getting closer to the answer.

But most of the time, overthinking is just… the same thought in a different form.

Running through it again, doesn’t make it clearer, it makes it heavier.

It creates:
• more doubt
• more pressure
• more mental exhaustion

At some point, thinking more stops being helpful.

And what actually helps is:
• stepping away
• making a decision
• letting it be enough

You don’t need to think about it perfectly.
You just need to stop getting stuck in it.

Support changes how anxiety feels.

It doesn’t mean anxiety disappears overnight.
And it doesn’t mean you’ll never feel it again.

But it does change how it shows up.

With the right support, anxiety can feel:
• less intense
• less constant
• more manageable
• less overwhelming

Because you’re not dealing with it alone.

You begin to understand what’s happening.
You learn how to respond differently.
And your nervous system starts to feel safer.

That’s where change happens.

Not by forcing anxiety away but by supporting yourself through it.

Anxiety recovery isn’t about never feeling anxious.

It’s not about removing anxiety completely or always feeling calm.

It’s about changing your relationship with it.

Being able to:
• feel anxious without panic taking over
• understand what’s happening in your body
• respond differently instead of reacting
• keep going, even when anxiety is there

Because anxiety is a natural response it’s not something that needs to disappear completely.

Recovery looks like:
feeling it… and not being controlled by it.

Less fear.
More understanding.
More control.

When anxiety is high, your brain isn’t in problem-solving mode.

It’s in survival mode.

So trying to “figure things out” or think your way through it often just adds more pressure.

Because your nervous system needs something first: regulation.

Slowing your breathing.
Creating space.
Letting your body settle.

Only then does your mind have the capacity to think clearly again.

Regulation before solutions.

Because a calm mind comes from a calm body.

When anxiety shows up, most people try to calm their thoughts first.

But anxiety doesn’t start in the mind it starts in the body.

Your nervous system goes into “alert mode,” and your body reacts before your thoughts catch up.

That’s why trying to “think your way out of it” can feel so difficult.

When you calm the body, the mind begins to follow.

Simple things like:
• slowing your breathing
• relaxing your muscles
• grounding your senses
• stepping out of overwhelming environments

…help signal to your nervous system that it’s safe to settle.

And when your body feels safer, your thoughts become quieter too.

It’s not about forcing calm it’s about creating it from the inside out.
