What should your blood pressure be?
Great question and one we get asked this all the time.
As a general guide, we’re looking for around 120/80 as the textbook “normal.”
If you’re checking at home, readings of 135/85 or below are usually considered acceptable for most people.
That said… it’s not one-size-fits-all.
If you have conditions like kidney disease or heart disease, your target blood pressure may be lower. Your numbers should always be individual to you and your health history.
Also, those one-off readings in clinic? They’re not as helpful as we once thought. Blood pressure can spike because you’re rushed, stressed or just sitting in a medical setting (hello, white coat effect 👀).
That’s why we now often recommend checking at home over a period of time. A home blood pressure monitor gives a much more realistic picture of what’s happening day to day and puts you in control of understanding your own health.
If you’ve been told your blood pressure is high, don’t panic, monitor it properly, track it and have a conversation about what your personal target should be.
