The 2025 Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines introduce key updates to the management of choking in adults, focusing on improving effectiveness, safety, and outcomes.

✅ The new guidance emphasises:
• Clearer recognition of choking severity (mild vs severe obstruction)
• The importance of calling 999 early
• Continuing to alternate up to 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts until the object is cleared or help arrives
• Commencing CPR immediately if the person becomes unresponsive

🚨 Life-Saving Tip:
Do you know what to do if a child or adult is choking? These simple steps can help save a life:

1️⃣ Encourage them to cough to try and clear the object.
2️⃣ If the object doesn’t clear, give up to 5 back blows between their shoulder blades.
3️⃣ Still choking? Deliver up to 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver).
4️⃣ If the object is still not cleared, call 999 immediately and continue the back blows and abdominal thrusts until:
• The object is expelled
• Professional help arrives
• The person collapses

💡 If the person collapses, be prepared to perform CPR.

🚨 How to Respond to a Heart Attack 🚨

A heart attack can happen suddenly—knowing what to do could save a life! ❤️

Follow these critical steps if you suspect someone is having a heart attack:

1️⃣ Call 999 immediately – Time is crucial! Get emergency help right away.
2️⃣ Keep them calm & seated – Help them sit in a comfortable ‘W’ position.
3️⃣ Give aspirin (if available & not allergic) – A 300mg aspirin tablet should be chewed, not swallowed whole.
4️⃣ Monitor their condition – Keep checking their response level and breathing.
5️⃣ Be ready to perform CPR – If they become unresponsive and stop breathing, start CPR immediately until help arrives.
