Yesterday (23/11) Area Beat Officers and Response colleagues from Unit 2, Kendal responded to an incident on the outskirts of Sedbergh.

We know that, whenever sirens are heard or where the air ambulance arrives speculation and concern often follow so in this case we wanted to provide a brief update.

*****

This incident involved a report that a kayaker, as part of a recreational group had got into difficulty on the water, near to Birks and that, as a result, he was unresponsive.

CPR was commenced and multi agency response was initiated.

The first emergency service vehicle arrived on scene around 5 minutes after the call to 999 was made.

As police officers at such incidents we always prepare for the worst case scenario, in readiness to pass news on to a casualties next of kin. It is without doubt one of the hardest parts of the job.

In this case the outlook was bleak from the outset.

Fortunately, other members of the kayak party were conversant with CPR, basic life support and had begun life saving actions without any hesitation with emergency services taking over and utilising a mobile defib machine to deliver the required shock.

We'll never know the impact of this early intervention directly other than to confirm that this afternoon we have received confirmation that the male, who had been placed in an induced coma, was suffering with hypothermia and cardiac issues was upright and talking to his loved ones from his hospital bed.

The initial assessment of his critical condition had been downgraded.

This incident serves as a very real reminder that ANYONE has the ability to preserve life. If you have the opportunity to learn CPR or basic first aid - PLEASE TAKE IT!

When it comes to situations such as this, every second counts and the power is literally in YOUR hands!

We continue to be in awe of the swift and efficient actions of our emergency services colleagues within the Ambulance (land and air) and fire service!

We continue to send our best wishes to the casualty and hope his recovery is swift.

🎄✨ Christmas Safety Reminder ✨🎄

The festive season is all about twinkling lights, warm homes, and plenty of cheer—but it’s also the time of year when overloaded plug sockets become a hidden danger. With fairy lights, heaters, and countless gadgets all competing for power, it’s easy to push sockets beyond their safe limit.

⚠️ Why it matters:
- Overloaded sockets can overheat and spark, leading to electrical fires.
- Extension leads aren’t designed to carry endless plugs—stacking adaptors is especially risky.
- Christmas decorations often run for hours, increasing the strain on your electrics.

💡 Simple safety tips:
- Use only one plug per socket wherever possible.
- Check the rating of extension leads and never exceed it.
- Spread appliances across different sockets instead of piling them onto one.
- Switch off decorations and appliances before bed or when leaving the house.

Let’s keep the season merry, bright, and safe. Don’t let overloaded sockets turn Christmas into a disaster—protect your home and loved ones by staying mindful of your electrics.

👉 Share this post to remind friends and family—it could prevent a fire this Christmas.

🚨 Seconds Save Lives! 🚨

When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, every minute counts. Immediate CPR and early use of a defibrillator can double or even triple survival rates.

💙 Why it matters:
- CPR keeps oxygen flowing to the brain and vital organs until professional help arrives.
- A defibrillator (AED) can restore a normal heart rhythm — the sooner it’s used, the better the chances of survival.
- For every minute without CPR or defib, survival chances drop by about 10%.

👉 You don’t need to be a medical professional to make a difference. Learning CPR and knowing how to use an AED could mean the difference between life and death for someone you love, a colleague, or even a stranger.

Let’s spread the word: early action saves lives. 🫀

🌟 EYFS changes that came in on 1st Sept 2025 — Is Your Setting Compliant? 🌟

Book Your Paediatric First Aid (PFA) Training Now! 🩹👶

From 1 September 2025, the EYFS framework tightened rules around paediatric first aid, and many nurseries, preschools and childminders will need additional staff trained to stay compliant.

Here’s what’s changed:
✔️ Students, trainees and EBR staff must have PFA to count in ratios
✔️ A PFA-qualified member of staff must be present during all mealtimes
✔️ Certificates must be renewed every 3 years
✔️ Settings must use a recognised/accredited training provider

These updates mean more staff will need to complete full 12-hour Paediatric First Aid to help your setting stay compliant, safe and inspection-ready.

💡 We’re now taking bookings for upcoming PFA courses!
Perfect for:
• Nurseries & preschools
• Childminders
• After-school clubs
• Students & apprentices
• Anyone working within early years

At Frontline Safety Training we feel all children should have access to learn CPR. We know how important it is for CPR to be started as soon as possible and equipping our children with the skills at a young age and then reteaching them every year after that, will help to hopefully embed that training. We hope they never have to use the training, but by giving them the skills, it may give them the confidence to at least have a go and try and help.
